Dell City Mini -Epic
1 reviews
 5 of 5

considering Texas has little opportunity for long rides or climbs or interstate travel ..here is an oppty. to do it all.

the dell city mini-epic uses gravel roads and fire roads to climb from dell city to queen,nm.
this is a climb of 2000' in 65 miles on rarely used gravel road.

you ride in the shadow of guadelope mountains as you ride up to queen, nm.

at el paso gap (mi.50) turn onto NM137 to ride on pavement to Queen.

an excellent diversion is to take NM CR 540(gravel) for 20+ miles thru canyons and stream crossings with an additional spur that leads to 5 Points Overlook and dead-ends at Guadelope Mtn Nat. Park.

full service tienda and cafe at Queen.

beginning at el paso gap near the boundary of the Lincoln NF there are literally hundreds of miles of CR/ FR available to ride. National Livestock Road(gravel) runs the length of the Guadelope Mtns( 36 miles)and drops off to either rtn to dell city or go on to Carlsbad NM.

you can also up and over Linclon Nat Forest to arrive at US 180 which runs past Carlsbad Caverns.

you can sag or shuttle.

you should get at minium NM mapsco or Lincoln Nat Forest Map.

Summary:
although not technically challenging, this is not for the weak or unprepared. the climb and lenght and isolation requires prepartion. until you reach el paso gap you will probably see one truck all day. once on top you will see a car or 2 an hour. there is a primitve NF campsite at Dog Canyon, about 16 mi. form Queen and Queen has a grocery store and cafe . water available at nearby ranger station.

the climb itself is a gradual grade easy to ascend for any fit rider. once on top grades vary but never over 4% on any long stretch.

off of NM CR 540 are many jeep roads that will take you in further to canyons and caves.
