Northeast trails - Chuck Heinrich Park

This network of trails starts behind the concrete dam at the west dead end of Jon Cunningham Blvd. Ride to the top of the dam from the parking area. There is a small section of foothills that runs east/west that you can clearly see from the top of the dam. Most of the "good" single track is on those hills. Head due south on top of the dam and squeeze through the wire fence. Turn right and you are on the start of the main trail.

There are several single track routes to take off that main trail as well as old jeep roads leading into the eastern portion of Franklin Mtn. State Park. If you head due west towards the mountains, there is an old road that will wind up to the lower pass over to the other side of the range. That pass is Mundy's Gap. It is the most physically demanding of all the trails.

You can't go wrong on direction and it is impossible to get lost as the mountains are to the west and the neighborhood is to the east. North is vast desert with only a couple of roads (one which will take you on a great epic around the north of the mountains) and south is a boundary fence for the military land (which has great trails too but no one rides them for fear of the military industrial complex....which has no funding to patrol the area anyway). Work your way up to the tin mines on the bottom part of the steep upward pitch of the mountains and you may discover some other great routes.

Take lots of water as this is an extreme desert environment even though you are right next to a neighborhood. Watch out for BIG rattlesnakes. The dull ones with the black tails (usually pretty fat) are fairly docile and you will have to throw sticks or rocks at them to get them to leave the trail. The pretty ones that make lots of noise are the western diamondbacks. They are very aggressive and demand respect.

Larger trail tires with lots of sealant are mandatory. Sunscreen is a good idea as well.

Summary:
This is a good network of random trails and roads that deserves exploration by anyone at any riding level as the roads provide easy options and the trails can range from technical nightmares to fun and swoopy seat surfing.

Recommended Route:
The funnest route is to enter the main network and head west on the first road off the single track. Go up the road about a mile and you will see a state park sign. Go left here and on the little hill to the left you will see a nice single track. Head east and you will have several options for more single track. Stay left and it will keep you on the longest portion and you will always get dumped back on to the road you came up.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Explore the area as you will find many options.

The marker on the map is incorrect. Off Hwy. 54 is Martin Luther King Blvd. Go north on MLK and take a left at the light on Jon Cunningham. At the end of JC is a parking lot.
