Big Bend Region

Home to some of the nation's most spectacular geography, Texas' Big Bend offers hundreds of miles of Singletrack, Jeep trails, and creek beds for Newbies and Pros alike. Mild weather Autumn, Winter, and Spring make Big Bend the dedicated Cyclist's best destination when the rest of the country is wearing mittens.

Summary:
This is a review of some of the trails in the Big Bend National Park.

There are NO single track MB trails in the Park. There are 200+ miles of jeep trail/4 WD trails. They vary in grade and conditions with some rugged sections but no extreme grades or elevation gains.

95% of riding in park is intermediate.

Drive the roads and survey and select sections you would like to ride.

Old Maverick Road: is washboard 100% of its length. No bueno.

Old Ore Road: is a good rugged jeep trail. drive it and pick a section you would like to ride or ride the whole 20+ miles from T/O near Rio Grande Village to Dagger Flat Road. Return on pavement about 20+ miles. You can coast on pavement from Panther Junction all the way back to start. Intermediate aerobically and technically. 1000' gain.

Pine Canyon: is a steady slow 2-3% grade on jeep trail. If you start at hwy. at Glenn Spring T/O you can ride 6 mi. and 1000' elevation gain to end at P/L at Pine Canyon. You could also drive along Glenn Springs Rd. in 2 miles to Pine Canyon Trail T/O and ride 4.1 miles and 600' gain. Excellent views of southside Chisos Mtns. and Boquillas Canyon and Seirra Del Carmens.

Grapevine Hills Road: not too interesting or challenging.

River Road East: some ruff sections but no large elevation gains. Survey and ride sections or there are:

2 loops starting at RR East T/O near Rio Grande Village:

1) combining RR East with Glenn Springs: 24 mi on jeep track with a 15 mile coast back on pavement. Intermediate. 1000' gain.

2). combining RR East to Mariscal Mine to Black Gap Road to Glenn Springs. 37 miles on jeep track and coast back 15 miles on pavement to start. Intermediate. 1000' gain.

WATER-WATER-WATER

there is no ranger patrol. yu are on you own.

Scenery and solitude trump MB challenges.

go to desert sports in terlingua for maps....several different rides. one trail system is associated with lajitas resort and severl trails are maped out on Texas Parks Dept. Big Bend State Ranch. there is one trail that runs from behind desert sport which has bike rental , repair and parts. all trails are a mix of single track and jeep trails.nothing too aerobic or technical, but trails are long and challeging enought for a good workout. littel elevation gain.

Big Bend National Park has jeep roads that you can ride but no single track. lots of dry creek beds, caliche, catus, a few rattlesnakes.

go to bycyclebigbend.com

you are at the ass end of the world. takes lots of water. enjoy the solitude.

Summary:
If you like riding through Sandy creek beds, Loose dirt and alot of ROCK, This is the trail for you. It was not a great place to drive six hours to ride trail. The trails where hard to follow, hard to pedal through, and easy to end up lost. We got maps, and still rode through sandy creek beds. Some beautiful country down there. I would go back just for the camping. We even got to share our camp site with a wild pig and her six babies. The people couldn't be more friendly. If you go camp in the Big Bend State park, but be prepared to pedal your ass off and not go anywhere.
