Village Creek

Pretty much flat with a few dry stream crossings. Probably the best you'll find in the Beaumont area. Stay away from the waterloo trail, there's a lot of sand.

Summary:
My wife and I decided to go to Village Creek State Park as we heard there was a nice swimming spot there plus a few trails to ride on. The swimming area was a long one mile hike from the parking lot but was much better than expected. A nice slow creek that goes as deep as 7 feet and has a very nice sand beach area. The bike trails I hate to say are not worth the effort. The first trail I rode was the Water Slogh trail and it's a wide jeep trail with deep tire ruts. Most of the trail is loose soil or sand with zero elevation change. The scenery is nice as there is a bever swamp and some nice tall trees but this trail just isn't fun at all. Just scenic. The Village Creek trail is doubletrack that leads from the parking lot to the swimming area and is nearly 100% thick sand. I mean THICK like a playground sandbox sand. There are a few large whoop-ti-do's but most of them are filled with this thick sand and they're impossible to ride through much less climb out of. A few sections of the trail are ridable but they're all less than 30 yards long so you're constantly getting off your bike to hike thru the sand. The closest thing to an actual mountain bike trail is the Tupelo trail. It's mostly doubletrack with no real elevation change and lots of ground clutter plus quite a few vines with very sharp needles. A couple got hold of me and dug deep enough to bleed. It would be a nice trail to ride if there wasn't so much debris on the ground. I had to stop quite a few times to pull small sticks out of my spokes and rear derailleur. At less than a mile in lenght the 'fun' ran out fast. I understand that this might be the only place to ride in the area but I would highly recommend driving an hour to Double Lake for a much better trail and a nice swim. I would not drive a long distance to ride at this park but highly recommend it for the nice swimming area or for some short hikes. It has potential for someone to build a serious bike trail out there as there are plenty of dry creek crossing and whoop-ti-do's.

Summary:
There are several miles of trails that run through the park. Some pass by swaps and some are through the sand. You can stop and usually you are the only one in the middle of nowhere. Most of the trails are through the dense woods. For this area it's pretty good.

Recommended Route:
I like the Village Creek Trail the best. It travels near the banks of Village Creek and ends up at white sand beaches of Willard Lake. You can then take the Tupelo Trail on the way back. This passes by some pretty cool swamps. There are some hills where streams have been that makes things more interesting. You can also take the Water Oak Trail. This passes by a beaver swamp and there is a sign pointing to the largest River Birch tree in Texas. The bad things I will say is that during the rainy season some of these areas will get flooded and take weeks to dry out. However during the drier summer months the trails are nice.

Summary:
Overall, the trails are mostly flat with a few dry creek beds and roots to add some fun. Scenery is great, but watch out for a few sandy spots, the park ranger will tell you where they are. There is one trail, however; which is lots of fun for the beginner/intermediate crowd. Find the first trail head on your left after you go over the bridge and you have a little less than a mile of some of the funnest single track in the area. Steep slopes into dry creek beds and short, hard climbs up the other side, one right after another, it has lots of big roots thrown in for fun. Take this trail fast and hard and I'll guarantee you some excitement. It is not Moab, but this is Southeast Texas and is just about the best your gonna get around here.

Recommended Route:
Get a map from the Ranger. Most of the trails are decent, watch for the sand. There is a small section of trail to the left of the road after the bridge which is the best in the park.

Summary:
Stay out of the sand, it sucks. The nature thing is kinda cool. Watch for snakes by the water, they're abundant. Not much but least it's something. Very flat, no suspension required.

Recommended Route:
Get a map. Go any way you like.

Summary:
Coming from Michigan and having the opportunity to ride some really great trails, I found Texas to be disapointing. After searching for a local trail in the area, I finally found this one. It's pretty flat, but there is a couple fun technical sections that might challange you. Don't go on the waterloo trail. It's all sand, but the rest of the trail is pretty much sand free. If you don't feel like driving to Houston, and want a good place to go ride, check this place out, its a good trail for all skill levels.

Haven't found a damn one. If you know of any other trails in the Beaumont area, write and tell me about them.
