Rocky Hill Ranch Downhill slalom course
4 reviews
 4.25 of 5

Like a big Downhill BMX course, but made for mountain bikes because it's a little rough for a 20 inch. I'ts long and fast with huge jumps, rollers and banked turns, not something you would expect to find in Texas.

Summary:
The Downhill Slalom course is no longer a usable trail, though Rocky Hill Ranch is open to riders and hosts thirty+ miles of sweet singletrack. Included are some fast downhill sections, like Fat Chuck's Demise, Black Trak, Hard Boil, West Fenceline and Lumberjack.

The first mile of trail can be pretty tough, and is discouraging to some new riders. Once on top of the hill trails will have short challenging sections and run through tree-cover provided by Pines, Cedar and Oak trees.

This place is a Cross-country to All-mountain style of riding, so leave the big (40+ lbs.) Downhill iron at home unless you enjoy riding uphill as well as down.

Aerobic and Technical difficulty likely touch a 4 or 5 in places, but overall I give it a 3. It's the kind of place where you can have it the way you want it by changing your pace or style as suits you.

Boomer's Bicycles runs the MTB concession there and offers emergency save-a-ride repair and parts. Maps are available at the sign-in desk by the bike shop or online at boomersbicycles.com.

Take the Secret Switchback trail for the easiest way up. Then have fun!

Summary:
This is a fun course despite some drawbacks. most of the jumps have no landings for the lips that where put on them. Flat landings galore. Kill the lip or extend the landings. The course was super smooth and is definatly a holeshot course. The race was run pretty crappy to say the least. Waited in limbo while the brains behind it all tried to figure out who raced who next. Up on the hill for like and hour and guys in my class had already raced 3 times while me only once, completely baffled by the logic. For an hour and a half drive I'm not sure i'd do it again unless they sort things out, like what race is next, if they can get it down to under 10 minutes it would be cool. But they definatly had some guys out there with speed. If you just want to hit some jumps for the day its super cool especially since these jumps are alot easier and safer that 6th street, just hard to go fast on this course without over jumping everything.

Recommended Route:
only one way down.

Summary:
Extreme. I rode this trail during their inagural race sometime last summer; imagine a BMX course on a 45-degree slope. Ive never seen anything quite like it. Be very familiar with catching air because the doubles will eat you whole otherwise. I wiped out so hard in practice I wasnt able to compete (I wasnt alone). Regardless, we had a great time watching. Lots of bust-ass in the last turn. Also the finish-line jump is nice and big with a sweet landing area. Bill did a great job setting this baby up. Nothing like it in Texas, or anywhere else Ive been. Ive heard they have a mellower intermediate section now as well.

Down...

Get a map and check out the extensive trail network beyond the downhill, one of my favorite places.

I was traveling and riding some trails in central tx, and we went to rocky hill ranch in smithville. the x-country trails were kind of cool but there was this fast little downhill course with some big doubles and some gap jumps, pretty cool. they say it was built by some guy named downhill bill, and they have races there. check it out.
