Downhiller Summary: I live near this trail, and ride it often. I can ride my bike to the trails from my house in less than three minutes. While it's true that a sidewalk that goes through the park has taken away some of the trail, it is still possible to get a good ride in. If you go on the right trails, you can make it from one side of the park to the other with minimal sidewalk riding. (The route I'm thinking of would require less than 1/4 mile of sidewalk) The park is mostly quick single track riding with a few ups and downs here and there. Some quick downhill sections and flat windy trails all over. I have a very good time riding here. The trails have a small bmx style dirt jump area. Additionally, there are a a few of other jumps scattered throughout the trails for the bigger mountain bikes. Overall a quick single track ride if you're in shape. A bit slower of a ride if you're not.
A plus for the sidewalk is the attractive ladies that come to jog on the cemented path. Always good for a quick glance when you're nice and tired after riding for a couple of hours. Recommended Route: Take I-10 exit De Zavala
Take De Zavala towards Babcock
Right on Babcock
Parking lot on the left just after passing an elementary school
The new sidewalk takes you directly to the trails. Other recommended trails in the same area: I wish I knew of some good ones.
McAllister Park?

Cross Country Rider Summary: trails marred by recent sidewalk, but decent riding experiences can still be had. not very big, but will gave beginner a good time. There is good cross country riding here, and anything with over 5 inches of travel is overkill. there was a dj course, but this has fallen into neglect and the drop-in was destroyed. Recommended Route: ride down the new (stupid) sidewalk and take offshoots as they come Other recommended trails in the same area: not much else. I haven't ridden McCallister before, but Ive run there and it is very smooth, and could be ridden easily with a rigid bike. Government Canyon is extremely rocky, and front suspension is almost a must. OP is the best mt biek riding experience around, unfortunately.

Weekend Warrior Summary: OP is an entryway to a nice beginner/intermediate ride. The previous posters are right that a lot of it has been torn up for the San Antonio Greenways project. However, if you enter through OP and take the greenbelt down to Bandera road and then on up to Bamberger park, there is a lot of fun to be had. If you're an expert, you'll probably be bored. But, if you're a weekend warrior like me with a yearning for something more challenging than McAlister Park, you can get a good 10 - 12 mile ride in without covering the same trail twice. More if you take the Bird of Prey loop north of Bamberger park. Recommended Route: OP south to Bandera road, follow green-belt north all the way to Bamberger (go under Prue road and then under Babcock), follow trails in Bamberger until you hit old Babcock Rd (no traffic - closed), then left on old Babcock and right into the Bird of Prey area for a quick loop through some pretty evergreens. Then come back to OP on the opposite side of the green belt. Other recommended trails in the same area: McAlister for getting your legs. Government Canyon once you've got your legs and at least front suspension (unlike me -- yes I know that's not wise). Flat rock to top it off.

Weekend Warrior Summary: The city destroyed this park recently. The trail network has been replaced by a road through the park. LAME.
Do not be confused by other reviews. OP is a wreck now. Not worth the time in any way, shape or form.
My 1 rating is based on the recent destruction of the trails. Before this I would have given it a 3.

Weekend Warrior Summary: My usual trail. There are efforts to clean the trail and right now most of the trash is pitch bottles and tubes from other bikers. I usually get about 24km on my run ">Display Text . I try to go in the morning during the week to avoid a lot of trail traffic. Forget it on Sunday evening unless you like meeting many people. I'm not anti-social, but my bike gets me away. Sundays my wife and I hike my route. Don't run me down, I might be picking up some trash. Right now (as of 8/1/08) there is significant land development from the bridge on Bandera to the Arena. It looks like the city is putting a IMPOVED pathway along the creek. Be careful there are a fleet of construction equipment down along the trail. Other recommended trails in the same area: See what everyone else said. It all the same in this area. But I'm still getting plenty of milage out of O.P.
