Martin Creek Lake State Park

The trail is mostly beginner status. They managed to work in more downhill than uphill. It is @6 miles long with about 1.5 miles for more experienced riders. The trail winds through semi dense pines with a branch across the trail from time to time. The drainage is good in the beginners section but not so good in the advanced part. I'd say about %15 is root bound which I find fun on a full suspension bike. I hit every rut, bump and root that I could. I wouldn't make a special trip just to go there for the trail (although we did make a special trip to that park). If you are in the area or want a nice place to camp, ride, swim, and fish its worth a look. Travel time from Houston 4.5 hours.

Summary:
Man, this trail was very hard to follow. I had a fun time nevertheless. There are several fast, "downhilly" sections. There are plenty of benches along the trail too to sit and ponder and smoke or do whatever you wish when you're out all by yourself. BTW one of the paths used to be an old road for travelers, prisoners and slaves, and I think my dog saw a ghost there (he was barking at nothing near one of the bridges). So yeah...a haunted trail possibly.

There is also a little lake, with a loud, smoking power plant as the backdrop.

SO...if you're nearby check it out...but it's not worth doing any significant traveling to see this place.

Summary:
March 2007

There was once a Park Ranger who rode Martin Creek daily and kept the trails clean and in good shape. That was way back in 1999!!! He obviously doesn't work there anymore. In March 2007, the trails were no where to be found. We could find the trail markers, but not the trail. I used to travel to Martin Creek and ride about twice monthly before I moved away, and I was hoping that the trails would still be nice. It seemed more like no one had done anything to the trails in 8 years. What a shame!!

I don't see why this park is still open.
The trail system is a complete mess and the lake is almost completely dried up.
At least the bathrooms are clean.

Summary:
I spent most of my time carrying my bike over huge logs and debre that had fallen in the trail. Ended up with a flat. Even though I am a beginner rider, I would not recommend this trail to anyone.

Ridden Trail:
Once a week

Summary:
I used to love this trail. I would ride it a couple of times a week. They have clear cut more and more and ruined the trail completely. You might get two or three to four miles at most now-ignore the trail signs that say you have gone eight miles. It would be nice if they would expand the trail but it probably won't be before I'm in the retirement home. It's still a great beginner course.
