Summary:
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME
I tried to follow what I found out later were XC racers in training, not an easy thing to do. I would suggest find a pack of locals and ask to follow them. The first group of locals I asked to ride with Nicole, her boyfriend (he was on his new trick bike and showed me some awesome jumps you rule dude!) and two other guys. We rode up and down twisty trails with loose rocks everywhere with some steep hills for miles. They went to lunch and I still needed more. So I ended up going in circles again until I meet three guys trying to see who could jump the farthest. Just like the first group of riders awesome people. They took me on trails and fast was the only option. These guys are jumping speed demons. It was great I learned some new skills watching these guys. Nick, his crew all on Haro's and Nicole her boyfriend with friends thank you all so much for showing me what McAllister has to offer. I need to get on these trails again.
If it's your first time at McAllister you will have fun but if you hookup with locals that are cool it's a blast.

Recommended Route:
Find some locals to follow.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Locals say OP and Goverment.

Summary:
I was visiting the area and added this trail to my "Tour of San Antonio". This trail caters to the Cross-country rider, racer and beginner rider from beginning to end. There are some technical sections, but it is mostly flat with just enough elevation gains to make it a good workout.
It was fun hitting the flat sections and tearing it up down the trail, but I was lucky there weren't a lot of people riding/hiking on a Tuesday morning.
Great racing trail that I definitely would recommend riding once while in San Antonio. Probably not worth making a road trip just for this trail, but great for the locals. Well marked with the main Blue and red routes.

Recommended Route:
I road the Blue route, the red route and then I reversed part of the blue route for a 14 mile ride.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
OP Schnabel
Government Canyon

Summary:
this is a fast single track trail. there's over 15 miles of trails aside from what's marked by the park. i've got a good time trial loop which includes three loops that are not part of the park. i absolutely love this trail!!! it's in the city and minutes from both my home and work. there are downhillers, bmx riders, and cross country riders out there. do watch out for the runners. there are some parts which can be a litte scary for beginners.

Recommended Route:
i usually come in by jones maltsbergers and start by the soccer fields. another good trail head is by the dog park.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
OP..."best trail in the city with lots of climbing and intermediate areas. "
flat rock ranch

Summary:
I was in San Antinio this last weekend with my wife visiting her family and decided to bring my bike along. I hooked up with a couple of riders in the parking lot that work at the local Performance Bike store and was invited to ride along. The trail mimics my home trail in alot in terms of layout but there was what I felt to be alot more technical areas. Some of the climbs here are more drawn out and more techinal due to rock gardens, roots and tight turns while climbing. These same aspect also made the descents more challenging but dooable and fun. Most of the flats were fun fast twisty single track with the occasional stretch of rock gardens thrown in lasting anywhere from ten yards to what felt like two hundred yards. We rode thirteen miles overall. Considering riding this trail for the first time while riding a hardtail and falling once in thirteen miles, I feel this is a great trail for any level of rider. San Antonio is lucky to have an easily accessible urban trail like this one.

Flip.

Recommended Route:
I don't have a clue. I just followed the guy in front of me.

Summary:
McAllister is mostly single track with different terrain ranging from hardpack, to sandy, to rocky, all of it fun. Some areas are very flat but twisty singletrack under a fairly dense canopy of scrub oaks. I rode there for 3 days, and on the first day, These are the only trials I could find. The second day I found the Airport loop, and the little area above the baseball fields that the Airport loop drops you out on. The airport loop starts out with a nice long and easy climb, followed by a nice long easy downhill section. This section is a little wider than singletrack, but not quite fire road size, with very little shade It travels fast, as all of the trails in the area do, aside from the "Armadillo Trails".

The trails for the most part are not very technical, but if you go fast, as I like to, then they get more difficult, some of the little oak trees sneak out there and grab you when you aren't looking and the gravel can get pretty loose in the turns. Over above the baseball fields, the riding gets pretty interesting. There are a couple of 12' drops if you like that sort of thing, and some fun dirt jumps. There are also some short steep rocky climbs/descents that are a blast. The trails are very pretty and there is tons of wildlife. I rode three consecutive days there, and saw 44 deer, 6 turkeys, and a handful of rabbits. Which, coming from an urban area such as Houston, is a big change. Another thing I noticed is how few riders there were. I barley saw anyone on the trials, granted I was riding on pretty early on a week day, but in Houston, anytime you ride there are tons of people out. The only disappointment I had was that the trails weren't as hilly as I was expecting. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but for the most part they were pretty flat.

You guys in SA are lucky to have a trail system that you can pound out 20 miles and see such a wide verity of trails and scenery and so few riders. As an earlier reviewer said, there is something here for everyone. If you find yourself in San Antonio I highly recommend getting out there.

Recommended Route:
I like the Airport loop just above the Soccer Fields and the twisty section above the baseball fields.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
This is the only one I have given a try.
