Dana Peak Park

Many different types of trails. From the rocky lake front and hill trails to the hardpack flats. Just started biking there and have hardly been on the same trail yet. Plenty of good climbs to get your legs burning and enough flat areas to get into your high gears and get a new max speed on your bike computer. Can be muddy in the low areas after a good rain but it will dry quickly because of all the limestone rocks and the run-off towards Stillhouse Hollow Lake.

Trail Directions
From U.S. 190 exit at FM 2410 (where the Heights State Bank is). Continue on FM 2410 past the new Harker Heights 9th grade center and look for a sign on the left hand side of the road pointing right to Dana Peak Park. Turn right on Limestone Trail towards the park and continue on past the first gate as you enter the park. You can park just past the first 10mph right hand turn for free (and if there is enough room) or continue on to another parking area just short of the park or continue on into the park and pay a fee...the choice is yours...

Summary:
I live about 2 miles from the trail and ride it 3 times weekly on average. I have been riding it a couple of years now. Now that I know the trail you can definately get 13-15 miles out of one loop if you ride all the spurs and out to the Flinestone Bench. It's definately a flowy trail that you can gain lots of speed on if you want. The climbs aren't too bad (excluding Dana Peak)if you are in good shape. If not, then you will find yourself walking up a few of them. Great views of the lake and surround peaks. The trail skirts the lake quit a bit. Lots of deer and various wildlife on the trail along with trail runners at times. Mostly single track though there are parts of the trail that open into jeep trails.

Recommended Route:
-Park at the bend in the road right before you get to the pay booth (if you reach the pay booth you have gone too far). Look for an intermediate climb right by the bend and hang a right. Just follow the trail and keep making rights. This main loop will give you about 6-6.5 miles. If riding the trail for the first time, I would recommend taking someone that knows the trails with you to show you the full 13+ mile loop.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
BLORA (about 20 min drive from there)

Summary:
Corp of Engineers Dana Peak park on Stillhouse Hollow lake: 10+ miles of hard pack and rock wind thru dana peak park on stillhouse hollow lake. i would say if you include all spurs, 20+ miles.

the main gate is no closed as they rebuild campground damage in flooding . HOWEVER PARK IS OPEN to mtbr's. simply park a closed gate and ride in. the main trail paralells park road till after entrance kiosk.

trails run everywhere over 6000 acres, but main trail paralells shore line.

there are several peaks you can ride up ..they are expert endurance but not expert technical.

main trails run flat on hard pack and can be ridden at speed. consider there trails beginner/intermediate.

if lake levels rises above average or after heavy rain, trails running closest to shoreline could be muddy or submerged.

all in all a fun fast trail with plenty of distance.

20% shade. no water inside of park or at entrance. campground should open sometime 2009 and will have full amenities.

Summary:
I rode this trail the thursday before memorial day. Just visiting some relatives so I though I would bring my ride. Lots of rain and flooding the day before. The route I took was really Rocky and steep. I rode over the top and had q pretty quick run down the other side to find out that most of the area was flooded. Some area were 10'-12' under water...No joke. I found another path but ran into more floding. Spent most of my time hopping off and walking through the woods to get around the flooding. Anyway looks like a good area to ride, when conditions allow.

Summary:
Well as far as the ride, I loved it, since it was the first one back from Korea, and all the mountains there. It is a great long trail and you need to be in pretty good shape to conquer alot of the trail heads. Pay attention to the cactus, they are sparse but will bite you in the butt if you are not careful. Next try and get out on the trail early, before the sun gets a beamin, long open areas, tend to ware you out and having the lake right next to you makes for some great views, bring a camera and enjoy, also take tools and tubes, there are some technical areas that will shread your tires, leave the sand nobbies at home get some real tires.. You will thank me.
Enjoy and see you out there.

Recommended Route:
look at the main route to it.
Many places to start from.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Any one of the many in Austin, and Blora, all good tracks.

Summary:
I AM A BEGINNER I AHVE ONLY BEEN REALLY RIDING FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS. THIS PLACE HAS TRAILS FOR EVREYONE. I HAVE RIDDEN ABOUT 10 TIMES IN THE LAST 2 MONTHS AND I STILL HAVENT BEEN ON ALL THE TRAILS. HAS TOUGH UPHILLS, YOU WILL PROBALLY HAVE TO WALK YOUR BIKE UP UNLESS YOU HAVE REALLY GREAT ENDURANCE. BUT IT IS WELL WORTH IT ON THE WAY DOWN ANY ONE OF THE PEAKS. YOU CAN SPEND 2 HRS RIDING EASILY WITHOUT GETTING BORED ANY ONE OF THE TRAILS IS GOOD (EXCEPT AS YOU GO THROUGH THE CABLE GATE AND GO STRAIGHT ABOUT 500 FT OR SO THERE IS A TRAIL THAT HAS A SIGN "VEHICLES PROHIBITED" DONT GO DOWN THIS TRAIL UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET MUDDY) I HAVE HAD AN AWESOME TIME EVERY TIME IVE GONE IT DOESNT MATTER IF YOU ARE W/ SOMEONE OR NOT. BE CAREFUL ON THE JUMPS AROUND THE 1ST PEAK I BROKE 3 SPOKES AND BENT 5 OR SO MY FIRST TIME OUT ON MY NEW BIKE. HAVE FUN!TAKE TOOLS AND A SPARE TUBE YOU MIGHT NEED IT ITS A LONG WALK BACK

Recommended Route:
I DONT KNOW THE NAMES OF THE ROADS, BUT IF YOUR COMING FROM THE KILLEEN AND COPPERS COVE AREA IT IS EASY TO FIND. YOU TAKE THE FIRST HARKER HEIGHTS EXIT TURN RIGHT AT THE LIGHT, GO ABOUT A MILE OR TWO PAST THE HIGH SCHOOL YOU WILL SEE THE SIGN FOR THE PARK, TURN RIGHT FOLLOW ROAD INTO PARK ENTRANCE, YOU WILL SEE SOME PARKING ON THE LEFT THAT IS THE BEST PLACE TO START.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
IVE HEARD THE TRAIL AT BLORA IS PRETTY GOOD TO BUT YOU DO HAVE TO PAY.
