4C - Trail
7 reviews
 3.57 of 5

The 4-C is a 21.5 (x2 = 43) mile point-to-point ride through the Davie Crocket Nat'l Forest. Part of the trail follows an old narrow-gage train route, although you wouldn't know it. This part of the trail is like a wide singletrack, not quite fireroad. The rest of the trail is twisty singletrack with lots of mild elevation change and good flow. There most be 30 really narrow bridges alone the route --one of them is about 200 ft long. The really challenge is to due the entire route. In 1998, it became easy to get lost due to logging so check with park rangers. There are a couple of 2 or 3 mile loops that depart from the same trailhead --THESE ARE CLOSED TO BIKES!!! It has been done in under 5 hours, but I recommend you plan on 6 hours. Swim in ratcliff lake after the ride and enjoy a frito-pie at the east-Texas style park cantina!

Summary:
According the official site, "No horses, bikes, or off-road vehicles are permitted on the Four C National Recreation Trail. A portion of the trail traverses the Big Slough Wilderness Area."

I've actually never rode this, obviously, so any references to doing so were because I had to fill in something.

Summary:
I have ridden this trail many times over the past several years. Great scenic ride, you can go far and fast, but not very technical. My g/f and I went out to ride this trail a couple of months ago and were stopped by a US Forest Service Park Ranger at mile 1. He was working on the trail and he informed us that the trail is closed to bikes and always had been. Really nice guy, he was almost appologetic and recognized our inconvenience - I couldn't even be mad at him. Unfortunate day, we had to drive more than an hour to nacogdoches and ride the crappy (short and boring) Lanana Creek trail and Rader Hills that have become so trashed up it's not even fun anymore.

Recommended Route:
You're cool riding the 4-C trail as long as you don't run into the Feds out there.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Closest trail that's decent is Huntsville State Park, or Tyler State Park Each one is about 90 minutes from Ratcliff.

Summary:
I have ridden and attempted to ride the full 43 miles of this trail many times since 1988 in all 4 seasons and have never had any problems with pot growers or hunters. It is very well traveled by hikers with the occasional biker. It takes anywhere from 5-6 hours to do the full trail if you are in decent to good shape and you don't take too many "smoke" breaks. Since it does take so long, bring a good bit of food, water, and smoke, along with tools and spare tubes. Have been turned back from completing the trail many times due to mechanical failure. Also, be aware of what time darkness falls, it is rather difficult to finish in the dark.

Recommended Route:
Ratcliff to Neches Bluff and back.

Nacogdoches Ranger trail. Did a race in Chester, but don't know if it is always open

Summary:
I hiked and camped the trail. I only went 3-4 miles, but they were exhaustingly long due to their windings and the gear I packed in. I did not know Texas could look so very beautiful. If I knew I could take a bike on it, life would be much easier. There are many roads that intersect the trail, so if you wanted to bike it, you could even if it was illegal to do so. I can see that the size of the path leaves no room for passing though, which will get you several yells from hikers.

I am curious to know where the pot fields are, I plan on hiking the entire trail with my GF and other friends. I can forsee running across these fields as a serious problem I would like to avoid. Please email me. THANKS!!!

Summary:
This Trail is No longer open to bikes according to the Forest Service. I called them the First of August to see if the trail was still open and the response they gave me was "This trail isn't and has never been open to bicycles".
