Bluff Creek Ranch

Nine miles of twisty somewhat rocky trails with a few good downhills and lots of tight singletrack. Watch out for an occasional longhorn!
Take highway 77 either from LaGrange or Giddings to Warda, turn east on to Owl Creek Road and go a quarter of a mile to the entrance of Bluff Creek Ranch.
Summary: I just road this trail Saturday July 15 and was suprised to find the trail was re-reouted just the previous week. The trail was cut down to about 7 miles and was not as fun as it was the last time I went. The re-route was pretty slow because it was not packed in well yet. It seems like some of the more technical spots were taken out which is the one of the reasons I liked the trail. I was pretty dissapointed having to pay 7 dollars to get in after all that was going on. I will probably not take time or gas to visit this place for a long time. Dont get me wrong it is still a beautiful place to ride, but not the same anymore. If any of you want a map of the new trail feel free to ask.
Recommended Route: Only one way to go unless you want to go around the cool stuff

Summary: Just went out to Bluff Creek this past weekend for the first time with our group of 5 from Houston...had a blast! We were very impressed. The ranch is gorgeous, complete with horses, longhorn cattle, rolling hills, and lots of pines. The facilities were very nice. They have showers/bathrooms, first aid, and free purified water available. The trail was fun and winding, and best of all...quiet! We felt like the only riders out there. We had a great hamburger (one of his own cows!) cooked up by the owner, who was very nice, and then hit the trail again for more. A really great place, highly recomended!

Summary: Just went out this past weekend for my second ride at Bluff Creek. The owners have put a lot of work (and money) into these trails since my last visit a few years ago. The trails are well maintained and manicured, and the bridges are all in excellent shape. Granted, this place is not the Mecca of downhill adrenaline, but it is a great place to go out for a weekend afternoon. There are plenty of fun descents, and a few short uphills to get your heart rate up a bit. Gas Pass is good for a little excitement, and the pond at the end of the trail is a great place to just sit and take it all in. The scenery is great, though, and I will gladly drive the distance, if for no other reason than getting away from all the Huffy riders at Memorial Park on a Saturday afternoon. All in all, it is a good, entertaining ride through isolated woods, complete with Longhorns and horses and all the things that make Central Texas great. Make the trip, you won't regret it.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: Just went last weekend with my girlfriend, a buddy and his girl. We had a blast! 10 miles of bliss. Not many peeps and the trails are one-way so you won't be yelling "rider" at every turn and can go as fast/slow as you please. First half is tight single track with some creek crossings. Last half is pure fun with long, rooted, descents...and lots of climbing. Gas Pass is a 40-45 degree 130 foot drop of pure bliss (hope ya can ride brakes cuz if not your gonna need medical attention). Oh Sh_t is a romp as well with a long shelved descent and twisting climbs back up. Trails are lots of loose rock, hardpack, dirt, sand, roots, and pine needles. All of the area is through tree cover and is quite beautiful. Cattle guards are elevated and ramped so don't drop a foot or turn the bars or your gonna regret it...just stay straight & roll on thru. The Nolans (Paul and Susan) are fantastic! Sweet folks who built and maintain this place FOR mountain bikers. Paul has a well stocked bike shop and nice bikes for rent, clean showers and bathrooms, camping, swimming, a nice porch to sit with your friends (and a cold brew), bike wash area, lots of Longhorns, 2 dogs, and a few horses. We are going back this weekend for another round and the fall weather will beckon even more. $6.00 for the day is cheap but bring your own food, ice, and drinks. I highly recommend this fantastic bikers playground. GO...NOW!
Recommended Route: From I-10 (Houston) go west to Columbus. Turn right on 71 & go to La Grange. Turn right on 77 and go 10 miles to Warda. Turn right on Owl Creek Road and go 1/4-1/2 mile and turn left into Ranch.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Summary: One of the best trails in central Texas. Nothing like riding and having to dodge longhorn patties and the actual longhorns themselves. Very good trail for all levels. My kids love to go camping there as do my wife and I. Also a great place to learn how to ride at night (easy to get back to main area if you break down) just technical enough to really make you pay attention. This trail is great, go if you haven't and if you have go back.
Recommended Route: only one way
Other recommended trails in the same area: The other direction but a good trail Muleshoe Bend.
