Sweetwater Grand Loop

Average Rating:    (4.5 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 2

This ride incorporates the Chula Vista/ Bonita trail system into a massive (35+) mile loop with many different options.

Start at the Bonita Equestrian Launch on Bonita Road and head east. You will make your way along a wide trail that follows the Sweetwater River until it reaches the golf course. Follow the trail under the bridge until you reach the first hill up the Sweetwater Reservoir park (dist: 5.3 miles). Continue along the sweetwater trail singletrack around the reservoir until you reach the gravel trail (dist: 9.8 miles). Follow this along some pretty technical terrain until you reach the Steele Canyon bridge (13.3 miles). Now you can continue north under the bridge and explore the very fun trail system in Rancho San Diego, or continue back by taking the road entering the water authority to the trailhead (dist: 19.5 miles. From here you can either continue along the reservoir trail or up the series of hills to the west; either way will eventually find you back for a return along Jamacha Road. You can re-enter the trail by taking a left at La Presa Ave and riding to the end of the road where the trail starts again. Continue west past the swap-meet, then back south along a canyon and eventually you will be back at the golf course and the original trail to the Equestrian Lauch (total dist: ~32 miles; total time: ~3 1/2 hours). Excellent long evening/sunday morning ride...

Summary:
This loop is close to my home. The loop is just an extension of the Sweetwater Reserve Trail that is also in the reviews. I would say that this loop is fun, it has a bit of everything. It is a good ride to take if you are in the area and looking for an extended trail. During the summer get an early start, it gets hot out there.

Summary:
If you live in the southbay, this is your weekend epic. Excellent ride for a saturday/sunday morning, but try to avoid it midday- the reservoir can be pretty unpleasant in the heat. While a good portion of the ride puts you on pretty basic urban trails, there are plenty of excellent climbs for those of us that like that sort of thing.

Recommended Route:
The route described above pretty much covers it; however, a fun climbing option will put you up Mother Miguel mountain via a rough rocky trail near the start of the gravel trail leading to the Steele Canyon bridge. The views from there can be stunning.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Otay mountain (paved but a real workout)
Hollenbeck canyon (secluded and good workout)
Otay Lakes
H-Street Trail System
