Sheephead Mountain

Average Rating:    (5 of 5)

Very slow and painful six mile accent up an out and back trail. First two miles are well maintained access road for hang gliders. At top of maintained section, take branch to the right and follow. Very rocky with (bomb blasts?) craters at spots. Excellent vistas all the way to the top of the increasingly narrow trail. At the top is a meadow. THE AREA BEYOND IS PRIVATE PROPERTY- DO NOT CROSS (sorry, no shuttling)!

Summary:
I second the first reviewer, really rough climb up the mountain, nothing too technical, just non-stop climbing. Once you pass the glider port, things get a bit more dicey, as the "road" deteriorates into an absurdity. When you get the the crater you'll either freak out or love it. Very rocky and loose, a very tough ride for me, since it probably took me longer to navigate the single track than it did to climb the mountain. Don't tresspass on private property, people out there are pretty jumpy with all the illegals hiking through the area.

Recommended Route:
Just keep climbing!

Summary:
After seeing this trail on the side of Sheephead mountain on my way to Corral Canyon, I decided to give it a shot. The uphill is absolutely relentless fire road for about two miles, after which it becomes even more difficult single track. The trail is very rocky, with large areas of the trail apparently blown out deliberately to restrict access. I am strictly XC, so the downhills don't excite me too much- climbs like this is where I get my kicks. As far as I know, this trail is fully legal up to the meadow section. Please respect the private property- I get the impression that this area is not too high on anyones list of places to protect. This trail was outlined in Daniel Greenstadt's mountain biking guide, a very handy reference if you don't already have it.

Recommended Route:
Only one way- up!
