Marine Land

Average Rating:    (2.5 of 5)

Everybody who rides Oak and Spring Canyons out of Mission Trails should avoid the ridges in Camp Elliott on the first weekend of the month. There is a shooting range on the other side of the hill which is used by reserve units at those weekends. If you hear gunfire turn around! The Marines have detained bikers and expelled them out the front gate of Camp Elliot. That makes for a long ride home. They are also threatening to confiscate bicycles.

Summary:
An update on Marine land. For those of you who ride from Santee to Goodan Ranch...BEWARE! Government land begins at the powerlines adjacent to Santee lakes. Today (2/16/07) there were four Marines on quads sitting under a tree at the powerlines. The were very polite when they told me to turn around. Per them all of the thoroghfare from the powerlines to the back of Goodan is theirs and they don't want bikes in there. Per the SDMBA there are talks in progress for the county to purchase an easement so we can get through.

Summary:
It would be a shame to lose access to this good trail. The Marines have looked the other way for a long time and will continue to do so as long as you keep off the crests. If you are spotted downrange while the range is hot, they will halt training and probably send out a vehicle to kick you off. Let em train, enjoy the lower parts of the trails. S/F.
