Summary:
This trail has so much to offer than just the two main trails that border the stream. There are tons of single track shoot offs, and this trail can be linked to Lusardi Loop (which links to Hodges), or Black Mountain. I rank it a 4 because the possiblilites here are endless. This trail system can be as hard or difficult as you want it to be. go to mtbnomad.com for some good videos of this trail. Here is one i like...

Summary:
Why ride Peñasquitos Canyon? The only reason I can think of is because you want to introduce a non-MtB'r to the sport or you're commuting from Mira Mesa to Sorrento Valley or La Jolla. As so many others have said, this used to be a great ride because once you got on the mesa to the north of the canyon, there was a lot of single track. That was in the mid-1990's. Now what you'll find on the mesa are tract homes, and a country club golf course. Too bad!

Recommended Route:
Start at the Sorrento Valley Blvd. parking lot and head east to the ranch house and then back.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Sycamore Canyon
Mission Trails
La Costa Conservation Area

Summary:
If you start at the large public park head west till you hit dirt. If you want to see trees, horses, etc head over the footbridge south from the park. If you want a little privacy at the expense of some scenery stay on the north side of the creek and head west. There are some single tracks off the main fire road but there extreamly overgrown. You'll have to discover them all for yourself and bring a patch kit for thorns.

Recommended Route:
I-15 , Mira Mesa Blvd Exit West, Right on Black Mtn Rd, drive a few miles down the hill. There are 2 park entrences. The first one has a $1 fee the second one (large public park) is free and stays open late.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Anderson Truck Trail

Summary:
10 years ago, this was the hotbed of local San Diego riding. Cantina Bike Shop was the focal point and many great shop rides started from that parking lot. It's not even worth going there now. I haven't been there in probably 7 years or more. If your idea of a fun time is dodging a zillion goofballs on a mostly flat, double-wide unpaved road for 6 miles out and back, be my guest. Penasquitos Canyon is just another tract home development now... the price we pay for living in an area where everyone wants to live and there's no room to put 'em all. I give it one star for nostalgia's sake only.

Recommended Route:
Get on the 5, keep going right past the Sorrento Valley Rd. exit to someplace that's actually worth riding

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Get a road bike and ride the Torrey Pines loop.

Summary:
too bad - another ruined trail in sd.
i really don't understand. mtb does not ruin trails. in fact it's the oposite - it keeps the trails in shape and narrow. sad to see this area become another boardwalk.

Recommended Route:
sorrento valley entrance
