Stone Mountain

it is strictly downhill trying to ride up it is not a good idea and you will see that as soon as you start walking it. make sure you have a hydration source on you and adequate protection. awesome 360 view of the San Diego Country Estates at the top. it''s got some technical parts due to weather corrosion but as long as you make sure to mark those parts on your way up you should be fine. you can go all the way to the top or you can stop where the trail intersects with an ashphalt road and go half way. if you would like to take that ashphalt road to the top, instead of walking the trail from the start, take the dirt walkway until you come to the street and turn left. the street has a gate but it''s kept open because there is only one house it''s a steeper climb but it cuts walking time in half.

Summary:
Stone Mountain is more than just a downhill rush. I would recommend riding around the entire mountain on trails that are clearly marked. It gives a combination of flat sandy passes, rigorous climbing, techinal low speed downhill (due to erosion), shady high speed single track with sweeping curves thar are so so fun, and a pleasant ride through the quite nature of San Diego Country Estates. I would use this as a training course usually doing two loops around the mountain. In the winter, during the rainy season is fantastic, streams to go through and overall a great ride. Lucky for you, as am I, if you live in the Estates.

Recommended Route:
Start at the Village store, heading north-east crossing Gunstage Rd. You will se the trail at the bottom of the mountain. Follow the trail at the base of Stone Mtn running parralel with Gunstage. Just follow that trail around the Mountain. Enjoy

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The Equestrian Center at the end Of Gunstage Rd.
