Spring Canyon

This is a relatively easy winding singletrack. There are some loose rocks in the dry creek crossings to watch out for. The trail runs from the north end of the Mission Trails Park "Grasslands" area. Shoot straight out under the Hwy 52 bridge. It will turn to winding singletrack about 1/2 mile out. The trail will wind out until it climbs to the top of a ridge. That is where Marine land starts. They will take your bike. Turn around and go the way you came. It is a tasty slightly downhill singletrack run. You can haul butt..but keep your eyes open for people coming the other way. This is a great trail for people just learning how to really ride in the dirt. There is a new single track being cut to the east at about the midway point of this trail. Look for the pink ribbons and follow them. It''s going to be very similar to the one I described, but more of a climb.

Summary:
This is a follow up to my first review. Some of us created a side canyon loop off of Spring that you can ride without going on Marine land. It is all winding single track, which is a change from the "jeep trail" downhillers are turning Spring Canyon into. For you guys who are cutting corners and widening the trail, LEARN TO TURN! It used to be a nice singletrack.....

Recommended Route:
Head north under HWY 52. About a mile in you will see a canyon going of to your right. Look for the rock pile at the entrance of the trail. Take it and follow the single track for a gentle climb up to the end of the canyon. You will have to hike your bike for about 1/8 mile to a level you can ride to the top of the ridge. Make sure as you are walking you take the trail to the left (NORTH). That will keep you away from the Marine land. When you hit the top of the ridge cross the dirt road and go down the other side. Watch out because it can get loose. The downhill winds around a little and ends up in a canyon. Turn left and follow the winding singletrack back to the Spring Canyon trail. Turn left and you are home.

It is a little bit of everything. The climbing, downhill and singletrack in the new section are more challenging than Spring Canyon itself. It is about 55 minutes total if you ride from the east lot of Mission Trails next to the campground. This is a great after work ride.

Summary:
A little of everything. 55 minutes from the campground lot. Novice level.

Recommended Route:
This is an update of my initial review. The trail I mentioned that goes east is now a loop! The entrance is at the mouth of the first canyon to your right as you ride north on the trail. Some of the ribbons are still there. The trail is a true single track and winds out for a mile or so. When you hit the end of the canyon you will see a trail cutting across below the rim. You will have to hike-a-bike for about an eighth of a mile. When it flattens out ride to the top and go straight over the other side. The down hill is not super steep, but it haqs gotten a little loose because it has been used more. Follow the trail to the bottom, turn left and blast down the single track back to the main trail.
