Fred Canyon Road climbs about 10 miles up the SE side of the Laguna Mountains all the way to Sunrise Highway. The fireroad is pretty decent for fireroad; it is superfast downhill with lots of varying terrain, rocks, roots, ruts, etc,. At the top the road crosses the PCT which is closed to bikes. Don't ride the PCT, which is closed to bikes, eventhough it "appears" to be a sweet-ass singletrack. Don't shuttle it from Sunrise Hwy all the way down to Old Hwy 80 like some "rumors" i've heard. Don't even ride up Fred Canyon Road to the PCT and ride down the PCT because bikes aren't allowed; besides, it "appears" to be really fast and technical, and if you go too fast you might fall down and hurt yourself and there wouldn't be anyone to help you because you won't see anyone. Don't ride it though because we don't want it to be closed for bikes, oh wait - it already is; well, don't ride the PCT because the entire Sierra Club might have a synchronized bowel movement.

Summary:
Great ride. The climb is about 14 mi. be sure to have plenty of H2O and sun screen. Forgetting this can very painfull. I know! The views are epic, and the only noise will be maybe a high flying jet on occassion. Once on Sunrise Hwy, keep on the shoulder as auto traffic is fast. Be sure to stop at the first pull out and look back at the Valley you climbed out of, you will be proud of yourself. Once you get on Thing Valley Rd. you will start to deccent. Not the whole time but most of it. Stay on the trail as there are several private property plots at the top. The Top half can be a bit rocky and tech. but wide enough to choose safe lines. The bottom half is smoth and fast. Be a bit carful on the tight turns as the soil is slick, but set up right you can rip this part of the down hill and your legs will be glad your there. This is a long ride with some lung bustin. But well worth it. Intro to Advance.
Have fun.

Recommended Route:
park under I8 on Kitchen Creek Rd. ride north up hill to Sunrise Hwy. turn right. Go two miles until you see Thing Valley Trail on right side. Hard to notice. Take Thing Valley back down to Old Hwy 80 and turn right(west) follow back to Kithchen Creek Rd. About 30 miles.

Summary:
Great Trail (PCT) where else can you NOT ride from Mexico to Canada?

Recommended Route:
You forgot one: Don't ride it (PCT) unless you pay to maintain it, only those of you that pay federal taxes. And remember that even though horses are not indigenous and crap all over the trail, they're OK!
