Banner Toll Road Rodriguez Chariot and Oriflamme Canyons
4 reviews
 3.75 of 5

Start on the desert floor just off S2 at the bottom and confluence of Rodriguez and Oriflamme Canyon (Oriflamme is named after a steamer that ran between San Francisco and San Diego in the gold rush days). Head up desert floor sandy roads to the Oriflamme Canyon road heading West up the mountain. After crossing the first saddle take the next left and keep going up Mason Valley Truck trail to the top (about a 2500 ft climb total) then cut across ( just 2 miles) the Hiking and Riding trail to the Hwy 79 just above Lake Cuyamaca. Head into Julian along Hwy 79 for about 10 miles. Turn East at the edge of Julian on Hwy 78 just one mile down to Woodland Road follow it East till it ends at the old Banner Toll Road. Follow this awesome single track for about 5+ miles into the old mining town of Banner. Take the Highway 1/2 mile and across from Banner Store take the Chariot Canyon dirt road and climb up again another 300 ft over a 2.5 miles past the Right Fender Ranch and left to Rodriguez Canyon. Climb over the Chariot to Rodriguez Canyon, down and climb up another 300 ft of road to the top. From here you can blast down Rodriguez Canyon through the sandy washes and boulders to the stating point. This is an epic ride! Elapsed time should be 5 - 7 hours depending on your stamina. Total climbing about 3100 + ft. Total distance about 30 miles. Take lots of water and a friend. Bring some Advil for the drive back!

Every few months

Summary:
even though the downhills are mostly fireroads, it is still a pretty fun ride. i did this on a rigid during the tour de julian and kept up with most of the group. its a little technical and you go at an average downhill speed (37 was my top) so nothing too hairy. the ride up banner grade was pretty sick. just gotta watch out for rattlesnakes and a dingo dog owned by a guy who owns an old H1 hummer and a whole lotta land. pretty fun though took me 39 minutes last time non stop. after riding that though, i was stoked to get a full suspension bike

Recommended Route:
just ride

Other recommended trails in the same area:

Ridden Trail:
Once a year

Summary:
Yes, this trail kicks your ass. I first rode it in the late '80s before suspension. It was tough then and is just as tough now with a full suspension bike. Not for beginners as you are "out there." Bring plenty of snacks and water. This is the kind of route that makes mountain biking, well, mountain biking. Challenging.

Recommended Route:
Down old Banner road (single track) from Julian, out Rodriguez Canyon, up Oriflamme Canyon, back to Chariot Canyon and then back up the old Banner road

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Any other legal trail/fire road.

Summary:
This trail is awesome and not for beginners or wimps. Yes there is a lot of fire road, but it is a huge loop, lots of climbing and the 2 downhills: Banner Toll Road and Rodriguez are muy bueno. Let me know if you make it up Oriflamme without stopping.

Summary:
it's a crappy ride. if you like riding on well traveled fire roads then this ride is for you. lot's of steep hills with little reward on the downhill sections. let my loss be your gain - you are much better off finding another trail.

Recommended Route:
only ride the single track to Banner
