Rim Trail via Mount Wilson loop

Average Rating:    (4.75 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 8

Climb the Mount Wilson fire road, passing Henniger Flats at mile 2.7, The trail head to Idlehour trail at mile 3.4, The Trail head to Winter Creek at mile 7.6 with connections to the Mount Wilson Trail & Chantry Flats. You reach Mount Wilson in about 10 miles with an elevation gain of 4300 feet. To do the Rim Trail option, Go through the gates entering Skyline Park. Turn left at the first road and follow it towards the end, passing the museum, the small observatory dome and the large observatory dome. You will find the Sturtevant trail head 11w16 behind the smaller observatory. The Rim Trail head is opposite of this. You'll have to locate a sign that says, Keep Out Forest Service housing. You'll need to go through this to access the trail. Maybe you should call the USFS@818-790-1151. Once you find the trail head take it heading to Newcombs pass, which is a 4 way intersection marked by a memorial plaque to a runner that died here a long time ago & a picnic table . Turn right which is the Gabrielino Trail and head towards Chantry flats. Don't forget to stop at Sturtevant Camp. Once you reach Chantry flats it would have taken you 12 miles to get here from Mount Wilson Skyline park. Descend the Chantry Flats paved road, turn right on Sierra Madre blvd, turn right on New York Drive and right on Altadena and right on Crescent to Pinecrest. The Rim Trail is a great trail. Exposed at some sections but it's like riding in Colorado in the high elevations. Must bring a camera! The views of the back country and rock formations is awesome.

Summary:
Lot is mainly closed to protect the observatories and people who live there. But also to keep boneheads from starting too late and getting lost. Also so they only have to patrol it on weekends. Do it whenever, but bring advanced skills and be prepared.

Recommended Route:
There is access to Skyline Park anytime the gate is locked. Park outside off the road, observing parking restrictions. Go to the left of the Skyline Park gate, and down the hill along the fence to where it's down. Cross (right), and work your way up the deer trail to the inside of the Skyline Park lot. Continue as per other directions.

Summary:
Rim Trail is in GREAT SHAPE! 95% rideable, which makes it so fun to ride! I completed my annual Christmas Mt.Wilson Fire road / Rim Trail 31 mile loop. Lots of kewl hikers, and lots of people who could not get in the Observatory, due to the unexpected closure. I get a kick in looking down the Red Box Canyon, where on December 16, 1995 I had to walk the steep 2N23 at night to Angeles Forest Highway due to a miscalculation of time and fitness. Hehe, never been so scared in my life!

Recommended Route:
Access to Skyline Park & the Rim Trail, Sturtevant Trail is closed Mon Thru Fri & Holidays :(. ***Alternate Route is to descend the MT.Wilson Paved Road, to Mt. Lowe Fireroad and connect to the Middle & Lower Merril Trails to Altadena **** ****CAUTION ADVANCED RIDERS ONLY ****

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Mt.Hillyer in Chilao!

Summary:
Haven't ridden this trail for a while about a month due to the low cloud layer and chilly temps. But what a spectacular today turned out to be. Crystal clear! The Mount Wilson Toll Road is in very pristine shape. Just in case I haven't mentioned in my many reviews, Henniger Flats is now equipped w/ flush toilets and running water. It's now a world class Campground, which also serves as a base camp learning center for the local boyscout troops earning merit badges. Wave hello to the friendly doscent / Ranger and sign in on the log inside the museum. Between mile 6 & 8 which is usually loose and rocky, a hardpacked line has been established to help you on your climbs. The Rim trail is in magnificent shape, less for a small rock slide triggered by the El Nino storms of 1998. Otherwise, same awesome views and clear smooth sailing to Newcomb's Pass. Once you reach Chantry Flats, try to stop at the Chantry Flats store for a snack and chat w/ the friendly folks. Ice Cream, cookies, drinks and chocolate are available. These are the same folks who operate the Mule Pack train w/ service to Sturtevant Camp.
