Idlehour Trail loop

Average Rating:    (3.33 of 5)

** The 2.6 mile / 1400'elev gain trail to Echo Mtn is very narrow and exposed.** At the corner of Lake & Loma Alta Drive in Altadena lies Cobb Estates. Go thru the gate and locate the 2.6 mile / 1400' elev gain Lower Sam Merril trail to Echo Mountain. Climb the trail to Echo Mountain and turn left. f you have time, you should visit the Echo Mountain Resort ruins].50 miles to the paved Mt.Lowe Fire road and turn right and you're back on dirt within 1/10 of a mile. The next 3.5 miles to the Idlehour trail head is especially easy. If you haven't noticed, this area is highly historic. If you have time, read the self guided tour/markers. Mile 5.5 should bring you to a 4-way intersection. To your right is the Middle Merril Trail 2.5 miles to Echo Mtn. Next is the fire road to Inspiration Point located .25 miles away. Great stop for lunch. The idle hour trail and the road to the left continues on to Mount Wilson Observatory. Descend the Idlehour trail for the next 2 miles until you reach the canyon. Beautiful! Climb and descend, portage in the canyon. In the early 1900's, camp Idlehour existed in this area to cater to the hikers of the great hiking era. Operated by Emil Gunther. Only ruins exist now. As you leave the campground area, you'll need to climb steeply for 2 miles until you reach the Mt.Wilson Fire Road. Turn right and descend to Eaton Canyon passing by Henniger Flats and back to your car.

Summary:
8/6/03 - The trail starts of very mellow with nearly no obstacles. After mile 2 you beging to see some switch backs but the trail still is very laid back. The biggest challenge in this section would be the bugs and the yuca's stabbing your hands (the trail is a little overgrown, but nothing like the Ken Burton trail). Closer to the bottom of the canyon there are many sections where the trail is completely washed out. Once in the canyon there are several boulder farms that fun to ride but take heed, you'll want to get out of this section as fast as possible before the bugs eat you alive. The climb out of the canyon was torture. It is extremely steep! We were only able to ride about half of it. The other half had to be hiked. One last thing, this trail is filled with poison oak and there is no way of avoiding it.

Recommended Route:
Park at the top of Chaney trail and climb the Mount Lowe road to the saddle. Decend into bugville and enjoy the ride.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Middle Merril and Sunset Ridge. They are much more enjoyable.

Summary:
Idlehour trail is a fun loop but I prefer to ride it Mt. Wilson fire Rd. and down the single track of sunset trail/echo Mt. single track. Also look out for poison oak on the Idlehour trail.

Summary:
4-13-99 Trail is snowed in, under 1-2 feet of snow! Pretty cool wet descent due to the melting snow, we took the technical Sunset Ridge trail to Millard Canyon instead and climb up the fire road and descended the El Prieto trail.

Recommended Route:
Park at the Mt.Wilson Fire rd trail head and bike the 2 miles to the Lower Sam Merril Trailhead.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Brown Mountain starting at JPL. Mt.Wilson Fire Road.
