This is a 6800-7000 foot elev. rolling ride on fire road for the first 9-10 miles or so, with a good climb, on fireroad to another climb, but on very technical singletrack. Then singletrack downhill for a 6500 foot vertical drop into Kernville. Very technicall, very steep sections with high speed sections and an outstanding test of skill and endurance!
If you ever get the chance go to the Kernville Fat tire Festival in Late October and sign up for this ride!! You'll love it !! I did!!
Also sign up for a single track extravaganza with the" Alta Sierra" ride. its an all day singletrack downhill, another great ride! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK KERNVILLE!!
From Modesto,CA go Southbound on highway 99 approx 3.5 hrs to eastbound hwy 178. 178 approx 20 miles to Kernville. Go to Mountain and River Adventures for directions or guided tour (Recommended)
Summary: This is hands down the most epic trail I have ever been on! It has it all. Scenery, climbing, rolling hills, and some seriously sick single track downhill. It's a long ride and a great workout, with exelent rewards for each. I would recomend going with someone who has done the trail, there are some turnoffs that you will need to know. Bring enough water for the 30 mile ride. If something breaks you are in for a hell of a hike out.
Recommended Route: Start at the top and, work your way down to Kernville.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Just Outstanding.(15 miles almost all downhill)

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: One of the best trails I've ridden...period. One word of advice, stop to enjoy the scenery...I crashed big time trying to steal a glance at the views, while trying to conquer a rather technical, way-too-close-to-the-edge, section...luckily I didn't slide very far...
Recommended Route: Go with the Fat Tire Festival folks for the first time. Call me stubborn, but I prefer to reserve the term "epic" for those "non-shuttle" types of rides, where you bust a lung for hours, see god at the top, and feel almost euphoric on the descent down.... You won't get that on this ride, but you will ride a kickin' singletrack downhill so long that your hands will cramp.....8^)
Other recommended trails in the same area: Some of the shuttle rides at Brian's Head come pretty close...

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: Trailhead starts at 9000', you can do the singletrack that follows the stream instead of the road for the first 8 miles. Then mixed singletrack and fire road around the next few meadows for 12 miles or so, then you will be 'bout 8000' elevation at big meadow, continue down another 500' on the technical pinch-flat singletrack into Cannel meadow, around and thru this last meadow and turn corner to the 4500' "plunge". This is the true test of bikemanship and endurance. about 30 miles total distance, depending if you go around big meadow or not. "Epic" the the only word to describe.

Ridden Trail: Once a year

Summary: If you ever get to ride this trail, do it. I've ridden it several times over the years during the Kernville Fat Tire Festival in October. Good warm up section along fire road. Then a good single track section of climbing and a hell of a single track descent to the cabin and high plane. From there it is a pretty ride through the meadows with some good technical single track sections through some canyons. Then the REWARD! The downward single track section for that hang on and RIP-IT feeling to push your limits of bike handling. You'll get tired and have to stop here and there just to enjoy the views of Lake Isabella. Best of all the ride ends in town where you can end with a nice lunch and stop by to say hi to the John Stallone and the gang at Mountain and River Adventures.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Whiskey Flats, Alta Sierra and best of all the Canyon trail.
