Verdugo Fire Road

The Verdugo Fire Road runs along the top of the Verdugo Mtns from Edmore Pl in SunValley to Sunshine Dr above Verdugo Park in Glendale. The Verdugo Fire Road is like the back bone of the Verdugo Mtns with Options to access the trail from all the locations above. There are some single track options such as La Tuna Cyn trail and the old youth camp ground just .5 miles above the Stough Cyn Nature center. This trail offers so many options making it convenent for those who need a change in Scenery now and again. The highest point is Verdugo Peak at 3126' elevation. This is a popular trun around spot for many comming from Stough Cyn in Burbank or Up the Hostetter Fire road from La Tuna cyn road. Once you reach the Verdugo Fire Road from one of the Access fire roads you will be rewarded with outstanding views of Burbank, The SanFranando Valley, Glendale, Down Town LA, Tujunga and LaCrescenta some time for 360 degrees. There is no really technical spots but requires a good climb from on of the access fire road which will be a good desent on the way back. A good detailed of this fire road trail net work map is avalible form the Stough Cyn Nature Center in Burbank.
You can access this trail from La Tuna Cyn rd, Whitting Woods rd, Beaudry Blvd, Grandview Ave (Brand Park), Walnut Ave (DeBell Golf Course) and Edmore Place in Sun Valley.

Summary: Parked at Wildwood Canyon Park and rode uphill to the trailhead (through an arch) at the end of the paved roadway. From there it looks like easy fireroad access to the top of the mountain. After 20 minutes, beside a pair of camouflaged water tanks, the trail turns right and goes up for 1-1/2 hours. It's a HIKING Trail, with railroad ties and these teenie switchbacks!
I was sitting on the front 1/8" of my saddle nose, grinding away at a 22x36 gear for a solid half mile, but gave up and walked to the top when the tenth hiker to pass me was a very old lady with orthopedic shoes. The trail is toooo steep for any kind of riding.
Once at the top, I saw the error of my ways. The riding trail runs parallel and west to the one I was on. It's wide, has a few deep troughs from recent heavy rains, and a few mudslides, partially blocking the trail. The trail runs to a parking lot at Stough Canyon Park, where I should have left my car. Riding back up the fire road to the summit was much more pleasant and fairly easy on the lungs. It took about an hour and a half up and twenty minutes down.
Recommended Route: Stough Canyon Park Fire Road to the radio towers and back is a 1-1/2 to 2 hour ride. It's not technical but provides a decent aerobic workout. The descent can be a screamer.

Summary: The Verdugo Fire Road is the Back Bone of the Verdugo Mtns. Many Access options form the surrounding towns and there fire roads. This ride can be anywhere from 3 to 25 mi depending which route you take and how far you go. La Tuna Cyn Rd is not recommended for the trail head because of vadelisem and theft to parked vehicles.
Recommended Route: I like the Stough Cyn Nature Center trail head because it's safe for your vehicles. The Brand Park Trial Head offers a steeper climb while Hostetter Fire road out of LaTuna Cyn is no quite as steep as Stough Cyn.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Mount Lukin's trail from Haines Cyn in Tujunga, More Challenging and very uncrowded.
