The trail is all fire road, but well worth the ride. It is fairly well groomed, but has some stutter bumps along the way. Nothing to bad as I ride it on a hard tail, and never complain much. The initial climb is about 9 miles or so, but not too difficult. After the first few miles you get to a clearing with a few road selections. If you go straight you come out on that small trail you saw just prior to the start of the trailhead on the main paved road. It is usually unridable as it goes down a canyon, and requires alot of bike carrying. If you take a right at the clearing and continue up the hill, you will eventually get to another clearing with a dirt four way intersection. Right turn goes to the Old ridge route, and eventually Castaic. This is a long ride for another story. Go straight to the radio tower where on a rare clear day you can see the ocean and the high desert of Lancaster. Our trail goes to the left, and continues for another 11 miles or so. It has many LONG mellow downhills, and a few easy climbs. It even crosses the Pacific Crest Trail (DON"T RIDE ON THE TRAIL!). Eventually, you will see Lake Hughes and Lake Elizabeth, and will make the final descent to the paved road. You will be back on Lake Hughes Road about a half mile South of Three Points road. Follow the road as you did in your car, and use the ride back as a great warm down. Special note... Bring lots of fluids, and a map. It's an easy trail to follow, but if you explore at the top you will need a map. Also, there is a great many wild animals near the top. I've seen bears nearly every time I've gone up. Leave them alone, and you will not be a bear lunch. Mountain lions on the other hand...Just keep your eyes open, and you will be fine.
If from L.A., go North on 5 FWY to Castaic Lake. Take Lake Hughes Road towards for approximately 30 Minutes to Lake Hughes. When you get to Lake Hughes, make a left on Three Points Road, and follow it for approximately three miles until you get to a small parking area with some trees and an old building foundation. Park here, and ride up the road approximately one mile or so. You will pass a small trail that is on the left that has a slight downhill at first. THIS IS NOT THE TRAILHEAD. Go about 200 more yards to a usually well graded fire road also on the left. This is it!

Summary: That's it folks. Keep the shiney side up, and the rubber side down! ;)
Recommended Route: Sorry folks I gave you some false info about the trail. First off the road to the trailhead is not three points road but Pine Canyon Road. I also looked up the trailhead designation road. It is 7N23, and it should be marked with "Upper Shake". If it's not marked anymore don't worry. It's a fairly simple fire road to follow.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Sandbergs, and Liebre Mountain to Sawmill.
