Sturtevant Camp est 1898

As you enter the Chantry Flats ranger station, park after the first fire road 2N40 gate you pass. Drop down this steep paved road & turn right after crossing the beautiful wooden bridge. Turn left at mile 1.5 Trail 11W15 [Going straigt ahead, Trail 11W14 will take you directly to Sturtevant Water Falls] Once you turn left it will be a steady climb on a narrow trail. EXPOSED TRAIL It's a typical San Gabriels trail, marred by rocks obstacles which you will have to negotiate while keeping in mind you are on a narrow trail. Once you start gaining elevation, the trail will be mostly shaded. The canyon is strikingly beautiful. Approx 2-2.5 miles later you will pass a trail leading you to Sturtevant Water Falls. Keep straight ahead =) You will have to negotiate a couple of water crossings, and negotiate steep climbs. You will soon pass Hoegees Camp & Spruce Grove Campground. After Spruce Grove camp grounds, you will need to negotiate a small water crossing. ***Go STRAIGHT AHEAD to trail 11w16 and switch back left going to MT Wilson. Trail 11w15 will sharply turn right to continue on to Newcombs pass and the San Gabriel back country*** Once you reach Sturtevant camp, an odd sight in the middle of nowhere will stun you. The only surviving resort established in the late 1800's exist w/ numerous cabins around it. I believe it is managed by a local Church organization and offers brochures for visitors to take at the entrance of the main pavilion. From here, the return to Chantry flats ranger station is easy. Back track to your car! Keep in mind because you are only 3-4 miles away from the ranger station, there will be a lot of hiker traffic on the trails. Watch your speed! You may also continue on trail 11W16 to Mount Wilson Skyline Park if you wish.

Summary:
For Your Information! I have found in my grandmother's album many many pictures taken in 1912 and 1913. These are all labled Stlurtevants...... and include pictures of stripped tents in the woods, very rustic buildings, a rustic bridge , Croquet Court, an early tennis court, a narrow trail on the edge of a mountain with a mule train, a place called "West Fork",several picdtures of waterfalls and bodies of water and one labled Sturtevant Yucca. Does anyone know who might be interested in these?

We were going to drop down Sturtevant trail 2 weeks ago and a sign at the top said "Closed for fire damage" or something to that effect. I can't believe they are closed with all the rain we're getting now. Some friends of mine climed the road up to Chantry a couple weeks ago and the rangers wouldn't let them hit the trails. I think they like not having any thing to do and getting paid for it.

This trail is so much fun. There is lots and lots of good tree coverage which helps on those hot days. Lots of hikers and scouts - be kind, share the trail.

Summary:
This was a long ass ride with some amazing scenery and incredible technical single track. We left the parking lot at Chantry Flats and climbed on a paved service road to the Upper Winter Creek trailhead. The first section of this trail is steep but after a few hundred feet becomes more well graded. There are a lot of outcroppings of granite that are somewhat challenging to ride over. After about a mile and a half the trail descends into Hoegees Camp. Here there is a junction of 3 trails. The trail to the left goes to the Mt Wilson Fireroad, the trail to the right is Lower Winter Creek and descends along the creek bed. The third trail crosses the creek and climbs to Mt Zion. We went straight ahead on the Mt Zion Trail. After several hundred feet a fallen tree blocked our way. From here the ride became a hike. There are a few short sections on this part of the trail that are rideable, but mostly it is steep with thick, scratchy brush on both sides of the trail. After about a mile or so we got to the point where the trail descends down to Sturtevant Camp. At this point we were finally able to mount our bikes. This is probably the sweetest section of single track on this ride. There are a few obstacles, rocks, logs etc. that a really good rider might be able to clear, but mostly it is an exciting and fast descent thru some really lush woods.
After about 2 miles we came to old Sturtevant Camp.
From here the trail goes along Santa Anita Creek for a couple of miles. There are little flood control dams every several yards that are challenging to get around. The usual pattern of travel around these dams is as follows: A short steep climb, followed by a steep descent with one or two sharp switchbacks. I didn't count how many of these dams there are, perhaps 5 or 6. Eventually you come to a back country campground called Cascade. After this camp you leave the creek and countour the side of Santa Anita Canyon. This is the most unnerving section of the ride as the trail to your left is exposed and you have to contend with the technical challenge of riding thru large sections of exposed granite. Eventually the outcroppings of rock lessen and the final portion of the Santa Anita Trail becomes a fairly easy descent to the Sturtevant Falls Trail. This trail is basically a dirt road. If you go about 1/2 to the left you can check out Sturtevant Falls, perhaps the most scenic the the SGs. To the right the road takes you back to Chantry Flats (about 2 miles). Hopefully you still have a couple of fig newtons left because the the last mile is a steep climb on a paved road back to the parking lot. It is here that wannabe Lance Armstrongs can try to prove how much endurance they have by racing their buddies to the top.
I really recommend taking a lot of caution on this route because it takes you to some remote and steep areas. I had a minor fall that could have been a lot worse if it was along one of the exposed sections. The first time I rode it we saw a couple of hikers being air lifted out of the canyon.

Recommended Route:
I don't know all the trail names in this area but I think the route I did followed Upper Winter Creek Trail to Hoegees Camp, Mt Zion Trail to Sturtevant Camp, Santa Anita Trail to Sturtevant Falls Trail/Road.

JPL/Brown Mountain
