Santa Fe Dam Trail

Ride south on the singletrack past the 210 fwy. Bear left off the bikepath into the open field on your left. Pick up the fun twisty singletrack and loop this area twice (called the Fun Zone). Watch out for the the jumps. This looks like desert in here. Now climb the rocky trail up small hill, go down the other side, head toward the lake, then turn right on the fireroad. Find the singletrack leading north from the fireroad (look for 3 rocks stacked side by side as markers), then explore this second desert-like area. Make your way to the dam face on the southeast side of the park. Ride on the dam face for about 1 1/2 miles in western direction, to the end of the paved section. Ride down to the fireroad (near the helo landing area), and ride north on the fireroad, alongside, and below the 605 fwy in this water spreading ground area. Then turn right (east) when you reach the chainlink fence. Go past the water dept maintenance building, and turn north. Go under the 210 fwy, and ride on the west bank of the San Gabriel River. When you pass under Foothill Blvd, look for a singletrack in the riverbed. It is flat and straight. Take it to the old railroad bridge, and go under the bridge. Get on the bridge at this point. Ride east across the bride to the east side of the riverbed. Go N on the singletrack, (you rode this S earlier) or if you are toasted, take the easy bikepath back. It's about 2 miles back to the USFS Info booth.
Exit the 210 fwy at Azusa Ave (Hwy 39). Go N on Azusa Ave past Sierra Madre Ave to the Forest Service Information booth. The trailhead is on the west side of the highway, it PARALLELS the paved bikepath.
Summary: Being a beginner, i found this ride very fun. It is pretty much flat, and it allows you to get some confidence riding on a trail. The only problem with the trail is the overgrown brush. The path is really narrow and your leg gets scratched up from the brush but not too bad. We were the only riders on the trail, but we saw a bunch of people on the paved path.
Recommended Route: We followed the directions on the posting here. The trail is kind of hidden but if you stay near the chain link fence you will see it. There weren't many options on routes, at least the parts we rode on. It was just one path that ran parallel to the paved road.

Summary: Im confused- THe trail directions send you nowhere near the santa fe dam. The trail directions above lead you to azusa canyon rec area. -not sure of any trails up there- but if you have a 4by, go up to the ohv area, up azusa canyon, take your bike and find some places to build jumps! Anyhow, if you like to send your bike into the air, theres a cool-but flat- jump section near the santa fe dam with a 6 pack, and a couple big jumps - but motors keep out!! -just find the bridge along Encanto bl. in Duarte, cross to the west side of the riverbed, and head north along Encanto about a quarter mile until you find a break in the fence on the right. Enter and immediately head toward the left and down- the first jump is straight ahead- banzai! Duarte also has a decent skatepark- which i've never found to be locked up, even in the middle of the night. --Great place for a post dirt-jump concrete session. --RIDE ON--
-JSUN from REDONDO -former Duarte kid-

Summary: Before going down it you need to inspect it on foot to determine if it meets your capability. This trail will lead you to the center of the park to another flat trail.Be careful using the trail.
Recommended Route: First go to the North parking lot where the vistor center is.Next ride the paved bike road North West toward the small hill, while you're going up the hill look to your left. When you get to the top or when you start to crest the hill you should see (two) small piles of rocks and a trail clearing, this is it!
Other recommended trails in the same area: On the west side of this hill to the left where the blue rock is there is another trail.

Summary: This is not a bike trail for extreme speed, however;you will find yourself riding in an area of the park so few get to see. This trail will take you (south) to another small trail that zig-zags through thick wooded areas, watch out for the small horned lizard's.
Recommended Route: First find the (north) paved bike trail near nature center.Next ride the paved bike trail (north-west), when you go over the small hill and come down this hill look to the (south) or to you're (left) there is a clearing in the brush marked by a small pile of rocks and a (blue) rock.If you can't find this trail turn around go back up the hill, then turn around go down again slower than before and look to the left.
Other recommended trails in the same area: In a month or two I will reveal another trail that is for more extreme bikers!
