only about 1 or 2 miles of insane, technical, steep, 4 foot drops, and much much more downhill
Summary: i just rode this trail and it was a great suprise when i arrived. the most challenging section in the whole area by far. top 1/3 is a blast. downhill, ruts, big rocks and switchbacks combined with stair drops in succession with lots of obstacles in between. approaching the second half section is serious though and you will need a full downhill bike and a full face helmet and serious conviction to get through that with out stopping or flying off your bike or riding with your foot down the whole way. its gnarly in every sense. i think its worthy of meeting up there with shovels and hoes and carving out a sick downhill course for us l.a. folk who are into that sort of practice course.
definately great training ground for extreme riding.
whos in? lets do it!
Recommended Route: only entered in from backbone. see above
Other recommended trails in the same area: palos verdes, sunset trail in san gabriel mountains and the whoops.

Summary: The trail down to Rustic Canyon from Rogers Road is horribly eroded and un-maintianed --not a fun trail for the short travel set or the faint of heart. Personally, I walked the middle 70%, finding only the very top and a chunk of the bottom rideable. Deep gullys, loose rock, displaced water bars . . . however, once you are down into the canyon, the trail(s) back up to Sullivan Ridge fire road are nice. The trail I followed worked steadily north along the east wall of the canyon, spitting me out just a few yards south of the access road to Camp Josepho.
It looked like there were other trails, too. Ratings are for the ride route from Rogers Road, down into Rustic and back up to Sullivan.
Recommended Route: From Rogers Road, as described in the previous reviews. The reverse of my ride would follow Sullivan Ridge fire road down from dirt Mulholland to just past the scout camp accees road and drop in to the single track from there. I imagine even more hike-a-bike working your way back up to Rogers Road.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Sullivan Canyon, single track section of Backbone trail at west end of Rogers Road . . .

Summary: tight switchbacks, lot's of drops onto rock gardens, steep downhill root garden (did you ever hear of such a thing) lot's of railroad ties, just be careful one switchback has a metal pole in the middle of the turn waiting to impale it's next victim ( not me) maybe Monty or Pepe
Recommended Route: down backbone where it splits, bare left or climb backbone from Sunset and go right, great 1 1/2 hour ride that way
Other recommended trails in the same area: cookies, the enchanted forrest

Ridden Trail: Once a month

Summary: this trail is not for the faint of heart. there are VERY tight switchbacks, 4 foot drops, roots, and ruts, and many more hazards(one switchback has a metal bar sticking up on the inside of the turn and if you fall, i will probably go through your ribs, and there are very steep downhills).
Recommended Route: drive to the top of reseda, ride to the "hub" keep going, turn left onto the backbone trail, go down until you hit a fork in the trail(about 3 or 4 miles down backbone), make a left and thats rustic.
Other recommended trails in the same area: backbone
