, from rancho cucamonga, ca Summary: when i hit the saddle i continue on to the junction with the red box rincon road. this a few more miles of climbing. i then take the rincon road left or north to the little used newcomb pass trail. this drops off the west side of the rincon road near a water tower. this single track willtake you down to chantry flats eventually. i climb out of chantry flats then ride down the road and work my way back to my car. this is a great ride, better than most which is aprox 25 miles or so of hard riding. not a good weekend ride as chantry section is way too crowded. weekday assault for me. Recommended Route: same as listed above except when i do this ride i extend it a little. be in excellent shape and bring a map for exteded ride. also lots of water and some food. it is long. Other recommended trails in the same area: winter creek trail mt zion trail mt wilson toll road.

, from MONROVIA Summary: For Bikers its fire road all the time, hikers can access the single tracks. Although this is a fire road ride, It has some beautiful scenery and there is hardly any traffic (hikers nor bikers) after you hit the dirt road. You can ride all the way to the old cabin, which is pretty nice, or keep going to the saddle. The fun comes when you go down hill, because it gets really fast, just dont fall down the cliff, or crash into a hiker or horse. Nice if you want a kick back ride, fast fire road downhill, or ilegally do some single track(not technical at all :)). Recommended Route: Once you get to the park, continue on the road to the boy scouts camp. First .5 mile is steep but not hard there after its a decent climb and you can make it as long as you would like.

, from Monrovia Summary: The trail gets steep after the ranger station so take it slow until after the boy scout camp, then its about 3 miles of semi-shaded trail, and 2 more miles of fire road to the saddle. On the way up you'll hit 4 streems, get several great views of the canyon, and there are places to pull off when you need a rest to avoyed being hit by other riders. This is at least a moderate ride and can be fast in areas, and after or during a good rain it can get slick, but fun. Recommended Route: Best ride is to park by houses about (1) mile before Canyon Park ride up paved rode passed ranger station take the fork to the rightand go straight up(parking in the parking lot at the park cost $2, I'm cheep so I vote for the extra ride time, please respect neighborhood, not being able to park there wood be a drag).

, from West Covina, CA Summary: I've hiked this trail before (never actually got to the end, it's HOT there). The trail can get pretty steep and pretty narrow. One slip and you have a one-way ticket down the mountain. I like the singletrack going up. What I did not like was the fireroad finale. I preferred singletrack all the way. But it's a good change because by the time you are done, you would be too exhausted... Recommended Route: After passing the parking lot, you'll see a singletrack on the left a few yards passed the ranger station. Take the left trail and you'll immediately begin your grueling three miles of single track ascent. The first fork you see only allow bikers on the left fork. The right fork will lead to one of the falls, but you can't take it. A mile or so later you will run into a second fork, take the right. When the trail starts to get REALLY narrow and steep, you are close to the last fork. I took the left. The right did not look like a nice climb. When you are at the fork you should see where the left trail leads you to. Down to the canyon below. What you don't see is how steep the descent is (but rideable). Be extremely careful and take your time (if it's your first time). Alot of ditches and steep dropoffs wait for you. When you come to the fireroad take it going to the left. (The right one ends up in a private property 1 mile away). The fireroad will spit you out on a street. Turn right and follow it downhill. At the intersection you should see the entrance into monrovia canyon.

, from El Monte CA Summary: Alright, the cat is out of the bag. I finally broke, many of you will hate me. Here it is the jewel of the san gabriel mts. I used to ride it every other day. but now I am living in Italy till 2001 and have been riding in the Dolomites. It is only appropriate I give you this. After the parking lot on the left you'll reach a small bridge on the right the leaves the road. Take it and it immediatly starts climbing. Three switches up to the damn. Keep going up and you'll hit dirt soon. Take this for four miles up to white saddle. There will be to other roads up there. ride back/take the one on the right which climbs a little then descends fish canyon(helluva steep/or go straight and keep climbing another 4 miles till you get to Rincon RedBox(the fireroad that rides the san gabriel ridges at 4,000 5,000 feet. The choice is yours either way this ride rocks. Recommended Route: Only one way up the canyon on the fireroad. Avoid connecting singletracks, they are hiker only. If you decide to park in the park's parking lot, be weary of the park's hours(your car may be gated in after dusk. Park by the houses, it's only a little longer ride and makes a good warm up before the climbing. Other recommended trails in the same area: If you go down Fish you'll end up in Daurte. If you go left on Rincon, you'll get to newcombs pass and ride the Gbrielino trail down to Stutervants camp(chantry flats) hike a bike up to mount wilson or stay on the fire road up to Mt Wilson then downhill the Toll road to Altadena. That makes for a killer all dayer which would show you the diversity of the Gabriels. Rock it!
