Marshal Canyon

Very scenic single-track (I've even seen a family of deer) combined with dirt roads....not really fire-roads. This place does NOT handle the rain well, so avoid it after a storm. PLEASE heed the warnings about parking and disturbing the neighbors. You'll find numerous different routes to get to the same destination -- making each trip a new experience. You can make a loop or one-way trip all the way to Mills Ave in Claremont. There is a small stream/creek running through the trails that must be crossed several times. Since the soil is sandy, you can expect to get the crunch/scrape sounds from your pedals/brakes/etc. The good thing, is it doesn't cake-up/clog cleats/tires. This is a VERY nice place to ride. So, please don't "ruin" it for the locals by causing parking/traffic problems, dressing/undressing in public, making loud noises, etc. THANKS!!!

Summary:
i heard alot great reviews of this trail. I've only ridden it once this past weekend and so far it was great, i love the streams. Due to work i couldn't really explore more than i wanted too. The trail i took stops at a golf course, does it end there or is there another way?? I parked on Oak Mesa Park, from their followed the wash through the trail. Was there another trail i was suppose to follow??

Summary:
I was chatting with some city workers on the trail this weekend, and they informed me that Next Sunday (10/14/07) there will be a large Equestrian event at Marshall Canyon. They are expecting about 150-200 horse riders that day. Not sure if the route they are taking will include Claremont Hills, but I'm guessing there will be some overflow traffic. I'd say it's a good day for other local favorites.

Summary:
I love this trail. I've seen all sorts of wildlife (startled dear running out in front of me, woodpeckers, squirrels, etc.). Good workout going up. VERY fun coming down.

Time for me to vent: Speeding down the trails. I've come across a couple of riders that have been flying down this trail, and what I'm afraid of is the potential for an accident. It's also made me re-think how I've been riding on it. For bike riders, I think a collision wouldn't be a major issue. I've fallen before--even accidentally crossed handlebars with another rider--and it's been something we can both shake off and keep riding. And believe me, I know how tempting it to go tearing down. I've had to hold myself back quite a few times as I'm going down this trail.

BUT . . . we're sharing the trails with people on horseback, hikers, and joggers. In my experience, they've been very nice and accomodating. I don't want to change that. I know I'm writing a lot to make a simple point (slow down), but it's just that I've seen how easy it is for one event (e.g. a mountain bike plowing into a horse or a hiker) to make an area like that off limits.

Summary:
Trail good for beginners and intermediate riders. There are many routes to take. My friends and I explored many routes, making it fun. Depending on where you start, you can have a long (or short) uphill climb. Then, choosing the right route, you will have a nice downhill single-track run. A few ruts and holes, but not too difficult. About two or three switchbacks. There may be a few stream crossings. Too bad the downhill is not long enough (maybe 20 minutes).

Recommended Route:
Park at the Stephen's Ranch Golf Course, then ride the road up until the end, which leads to the trail. Explore your way around, and have fun.
