Lower SART

Best as a drop run. Lower Santa Ana River Trail is a great single track. A lot of steep technical sections. Begins at around 5500' elevation and descends to 1300' at Mentone. Get a trail map from the ranger station in Mentone on the way up.

Summary:
This is one of the best "secret" single tracks in southern california. Most beta available is on the upper SART, which is also a great trail, but the lower SART is a phenomenal descent. Start from fire road 1N12 at angelus oaks, behind the post office. Take 1N12 about 1.5 miles beyond the post office to a SART sign. Pick up the SART single track and proceed SOUTH. If you go the wrong way (North / West), you will be riding the Upper trail. (see Upper SART). Its all single track!! The first 2 miles is flat, maybe slightly climbing, a good warm up...then its rock 'n roll baby for the next 6 to 7 miles. All down hill, and a lot of fairly steep technical terrain mixed with some super fun flat track. The single track dumps you back on to fire road 1N12. Proceed down this approximately 2 mile to a split. Stay hard left. proceed about 2 more miles on fire road, to another split. Take the right fire road...a moderate 3 mile climb takes you to Morton peak fire look out. A fantastic view and great place for a break. From morton peak, the SART takes off single track again and is well marked. The last 4 to 5 miles is moderately steep, sidehill single track, and fairly technical, with a bunch of "high consequence" sections. Missing a turn could easily put you 100 yards down a steep ravine. You wind up on one of sveral ranch / fire roads which all dump you out on greenspot road in mentone. EPIC!!

Recommended Route:
Drop ride from Angelus oaks to mentone. A lot of riding (18 mi +) for only about 30 minutes of road time up Hwy 38.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Upper SART
