Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Cross Country Rider Summary: This is a hard trail to climb on a bike (very different from nearby San Juan Trail to Blue Jay). Lots of short hike-a-bikes followed by rideable sections. The downhills get down right scary on a hardtail (hardtail with 5" travel Z1 on front) bike, but still doable (lots of dabs on the way down). I pulled 5 ticks off me during this ride. Expect some bush scratch too. Unfortunately, last week I went over the handlebars and broke my wrist on this trail. I crashed on a very steep rocky section toward the bottom, that I should have walked (front wheel got wedged in a rock). I have been riding for years on most of the trails in Cleveland National and this was my first broken bone biking. I still like the trail, but it would be better to go down it on a free ride-longer travel full suspension bike. Recommended Route: Park at San Juan Trailhead, ride up the road to the Lazy Ranch entrance(go through the gate on the left that has a no trespassing sign on it). The no trespassing sign is actually referring to the private road on the right, but looks like the trail is closed. Go up fireroad a 1/4 mile. Left at Los Pinos trail sign...start climbing and climbing. Other recommended trails in the same area: San Juan is my favorite...right next to this one.

Ridden Trail: Once a year

Cross Country Rider Summary: Trail has been recently brushed, and is completely rideable except for the hike a bike sections, many of which are too steep to ride up. I would still recommend at least some arm warmers for the remaining brush, and leg warmers would be an added plus, but not needed. I rode it without them and only had minor scratches. Trail is in good shape overall, and some of the downhills are very steep, rocky, and loose. They are completely makeable if you are confident in your technical descending skills. Some tight switchbacks top the last section of the ride off, finishing with some fun roller coaster singletrack with the last section being RR tie stairs. This is NOT an intermediate ride, so stay at home and practice till both your cardio and downhill skills are both very sharp. Plan for a good 3-5 hour ride time to finish the entire thing. Bring 3-5 bars/gels and some lunch as you will need it. Can get fill up water at Blue Jay campground. Consider electrolyte replacement to ward off cramping. Can be very hot ride. Recommended Route: San Juan Trail up to Main Divide, down Los Pinos Trail. Other recommended trails in the same area: San Juan Trail (out & back)

Cross Country Rider Summary: Be prepared for a lot of hike-a-biking, both up and down. The trail is loose in most spots and you'll be sliding down most of the downhill stretches. We did this ride on 12/31/2003 and the trail was fairly well brushed, although my legs still look like I was in a catfight. This trail is remote and not used much so I wouldn't recommend doing it alone. Bring plenty of water, food and spares. Give yourself plenty of time since this is not a place I would want to get stranded after sunset.
From the junction of Main Divide and Trabuco Cyn, it's about 11 miles of punishment until you drop down into the Canyon at the Lazy W Ranch. Unless you're a really strong technical rider, plan on taking about 3 hours to ride from the Main Divide to the bottom of the canyon. Recommended Route: Ride up San Juant Trail to Bluejay and go left to the Main Divide. Up the main divide to the next gate and go left again. This is the junction of Los Pinos (to the left) and Trabuco Cyn (on the right). Los Pinos is easy to follow to the bottom. Have fun. Other recommended trails in the same area: San Juan Trail, Treabuco Canyon, Chiquito Falls.

, from Costa Mesa Summary: Los Pinos is loose. A series of very steep up & downs Try to ride up as much as you can, but be prepared to hike up most of the hills. The trail has been brushed out considerably. All of the horror stories of the brush are from years back. With increased use & trail maintenance, this trial is wide open. I do recommend wearing a jacket or pants because you are bound to get a bit cut up. I tend to do this loop on a cool winter day with clouds so that it is comfortable to wear some pants & jacket. If it is warm, you will feel it! There is a lot of "UP" on this "downhill". Recommended Route: Park @ San Juan Trailhead ride up San Juan to Blue Jay campground, up Main Divide to Munhall Saddle (Trabuco @ Los Pinos Trailheads) Take Los Pino down. Other recommended trails in the same area: all of the trails in the trabuco district are similar, but have their own charachter.
