La Tuna Canyon loop
23 reviews
 3.65 of 5

La Tuna Canyon - Starting from the gate ride until you reach a steep asphalt paved climb and turn right here to Hostetter fire road(mile 0.5). You'll notice nice views of the cities below. Once you reach the intersection of Hostetter fire road and Verdugo Fire road (T instersection) you can stop here and rest (mile 3.4, elevation gain approx 1200 feet) Enjoy the view. Turn right to Verdugo Fire road and note your mileage. You'll need to descend this fire road and locate the unsigned trail at mile 5.8 on the right hand side. Descend the trail, be careful, the trail is narrow and rutty due to the recent rain storms. Descend to the canyon and climb out the canyon to La Tuna Canyon road. Turn Right and be careful while riding the road back to your car. The people driving this road are very careless and not very courteous. Summary:
I had my first time back in the saddle after a 2 year layoff. Decided to keep it nearby and go to la tuna canyon on 7/19/08. Parked at my usual spot, off the 210 fwy. My car got broken into and they jacked my dvd head unit.

Guy parked next to me was asking if i wanted to buy a bike. Brown sentra (or something like that). I hate him. Mexican dude, bout 5'6".

Its too damn easy for thiefs to steal from people there. Needless to say im pissed and I hope i see him again.

Road leading up to dirt fireroad is as tuff as i remember! Didnt go to top... still working the legs on that one! Do not know single track status.

Summary:
I've only been riding about 2 months and have no real technical ability, but this trail was easily navigated. There were a few ruts that I had to walk but a more experienced rider could probably clear them without a problem. That being said, the trail was in good shape. It was not overgrown at all. A great introduction to singletrack.

Recommended Route:
Up Stough canyon, left at the T, unmarked trail starts at the second turnout.

Summary:
Okay, so this trail has some strengths and some weaknesses compared to the rest of the riding around th LA area. I just rode it today, and the singletrack section is in bad shape in some spots...just really loose sand and rutted up. It's not so bad you have to walk, but you can't really open up the throttle and bomb it, which is what makes all the climbing worth to me. If you like slow and technical, it's okay, but not great. Lots of climbing, great views, but no chance to really go fast.

Recommended Route:
I usually start in Burbank, because the parking is safer and you won't get your car broken into. I ride up the Stough Canyon fireroad (starts at the eastern-most part of Walnut Ave, by the Stough Cyn Nature Center) and then turn right. From here, it's a short climb to the singletrack, which is on your left in a very obvious spot. Ride the meandering singletrack down to La Tuna Cyn Rd, which runs parrallel to the 210. Follow La Tuna Cyn Rd until you hit the parking area, and then it's a long, tedious climb up to all the antennas. the climb sucks, but the view is awesome. From the top, take the Verdugo Motorway west until you hit the trail you first came up on. Then coast down to Burbank.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Honestly, it's worth the extra driving time to go out to Malibu and ride the backbone. It's faster, more technical and more fun.

Summary:
Before you hit dirt, there is a pretty steep climb, paved road. At the T intersection, you will see somekind-transmitting-stations. There is some space you can sit and have a better view at the further station. I ride this trail almost everyday alone, but have tried a singletrack few times. Because the singletrack is tough and I don't have skill to ride.
If you are unlike me, you will LOVE the singletrack.

Recommended Route:
Follow other riders
