Summary:
Here’s a better idea for riding Hummingbird Trail as a loop. This alternate will allow you to avoid the pavement climb of Santa Susana Pass Road, and instead add several miles of beautiful single track.

Recommended Route:
After riding Hummingbird to the bottom, most people ride Kuehner Road SOUTH to hook up with Santa Susana Pass Road. Instead, while on Kuehner, before you get to the bridge over the railroad tracks, turn left on Smith Road and proceed EAST into Corriganville Park. Continue through the park’s dirt parking lot and follow the trail that continues past the lot (continuing EAST). Keep staying right so that eventually you will veer out at the railroad tracks about 150 yards before the train tunnel. Carefully cross the tracks and look for two yellow posts on the other side. Continue between the posts, veer left and you will pass a small square section of chain-link fence. This is the beginning of the REAL Stagecoach Trail, built in the 1870s, that will take you all the way to the top of Santa Susana Pass Road just before Rocky Peak. The trail is well established now after lots of hard work cutting back the overgrown vegitation. There is one fork about ¾ mile up the singletrack – you will stay left, cross a dry creek, and then continue climbing to the top.

Riding this trail is more strenuous than the pavement climb, but we feel it’s much more enjoyable climbing singletrack than taking your chances with the cell-phone distracted motorists using Santa Susan Pass Road as a commute. We hope you enjoy it too!

Summary:
This is a really good trail if you live near the San Fernando Valley. Initial uphill will get you warmed up and prepped for the rocky decent down. If your riding on a hardtail like me, judge your speed accordingly and watch some of those rocks: they can throw you off rythym and launch you into .... yeah. Didn't see any hikers when I went (05/06/2004 @ 1630), came across three other mountain bikers. A good trail to improve your balance and braking technique(s). Better hope you have disc brakes or great control on V-brakes when you start the descent. The next time I go up, I'll take a picture for the forum.
The climb from Rocky Peak/118 to the trailhead for Hummingbird is only 1.5 miles or so.

Recommended Route:
There are several different routes to take... depending on what you want to get over with first. The easiest is to probably exit off of Rocky Peak (west bound 118 freeway) and park just off the exit. Ride up to Hummingbird, down the mountain to Kuehner, take a quick stop at the gas station for a drink, then up the Santa Susana Pass back to Rocky Peak. You can also park off Kuehner, ride up Santa Susana Pass and vice versa.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Chumash, Johnson, Aliso Canyon, Limekiln, Palisades, Black Canyon (the road leading up to Boeing that connects back Box Canyon).

Summary:
This trail combines interesting scenery with a challenging ride/hike that is only 30 minutes drive from Hollywood.

Most of the previous reviewers must be pretty experienced; for out of shape novices like me, this trail is pretty tough er, challenging. I started by parking my car on Kuehner Road and climbing 2 miles up the Santa Suzanna Pass road to Rocky Peak Road. From the trail head just off the 118 FWY, there's a more steep climbing about a mile up the Rocky Peak fire road to the Hummingbird Trail head. It's clearly marked.

Hummingbird trail is all downhill singletrack. It starts and ends easily but the middle mile is full of tight rocky switchbacks, occasional 1-3 foot drops and sections where a missed turn = big pain/death! The scenic standout is the cool rock formations and caves about halfway down the trail. Just after the caves, there's a 3' drop between two big boulders that my bike barely fit through and I swear there was dried blood on the rocks on either side. The trail ends with some fast downhill sections that end up back on Kuehner Road. All in all, the loop took about 2 hours. Someone in better shape could probably do it in half that time as I walked about 1/3 of the distance.

Recommended Route:
I liked riding up the Santa Suzanna pass first to warm up and get it out of the way.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I haven't ridden any others in the area yet.

Summary:
This has got to be one the best and most challenging trails I have been on. You have to keep your eyes open on every turn because you never know what obstical will be in your way. This is a very good low Expert trail ride which will bring a big smile to any trail riders face.

Recommended Route:
Coming from Simi Valley, get off Kuener (spelling)go right, take that all the way up the mountain till you get to Rocky Peak Road. Go left and park at the trailhead or you can park on the right hand side. Once at trailhead, its about a mile climb up to the top. The trail is well marked.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Chumash, G-Spot (for all the crazy downhillers out there)
