Earl Canyon Motorway
7 reviews
 4 of 5

To the locals Earl is synonymous with "hurl", mainly because of the roads overall steepness. But dont let that fool you, because there are sections of the fire road that are very steep. During heavy rains the road effectively becomes a single track as you try to avoid the wash ruts in these sections. Along the road there are 3 emergency fire catches, with the top most one at the fork to Angeles Crest (down to the right) and Mt Lukens/Haines Canyon (up to the left). While there are some riders/hikes to be seen in the late afternoons, most of the time the road is empty.

Summary:
it is loose, steep and a great workout...if you live in the area, go down to the ranger station on angeles crest and ride as fast as you can down the highway to foothill blvd..keeping up with cars on a mountain bike turns heads every time. Fun to see the reaction on people's faces...

Recommended Route:
start at the trailhead mentioned above.. and keep riding up until you reach the antennas above la crescenta/tujunga..

Other recommended trails in the same area:
el prieto, you can ride to the jpl trailhead from home or go ride up la tuna canyon, both are great after-work rides...especially at night with HID lights...

Summary:
Nice groomed fire road w/ steep grades. The steepest grades level out at 10 yard intervals but needs to be riden aggressively because of the percent of camber. A late afternoon start puts you into the shade on the east side of the trail. Try to make "The Pearl of Earl" without stopping. Or is it Hurl of Earl? Having good brakes is a must and changing to more aggressive tires helps. I wouldn't recommend it to beginners as it's more of a workout ride. Be careful of hikers and bikers coming down! It's fast with sandy washouts. I've freddied a few times both up (Pearl) and down.

Recommended Route:
Start at the Angeles Crest ranger station, ride to the fork at the top and come DOWN Earl Canyon. It's gnarley and fast. I like to make loops from both directions.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Chilao for all you hammerheads. Brown Mt for a fun ride.

Summary:
Rode earl yesterday. after two and a half miles it is super soft making one of the hardest rides arround even harder. AS the trail gets steeper it gets softer. It takes an hour to get to the intersection of lukins, allow fifteen more minutes because of conditions. After you get to the ridge the traction is fine and you can cruise to the top of Lukins.

Recommended Route:
up

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Wieding Woods
