There are two main trails from the bottom - Burbank or Cobal. Both are intermediate fireroad climbs. Once you reach the top, you can drop down into Marshall Canyon (see Marshall canyon write up) or go up to Potato Mountain. Great fast trails with some single-tracks on the Marshall Canyon side.
Summary: I ride this area more in the summer as the Cobal fire road provides a lot of shade for the first part of the climb. The Burbank fire road is exposed to the sun for the entire climb.
Recommended Route: Have been riding this area for about 15 years. My favorite route is to take Cobal (nice and shady in the summer mornings) to the fork in the road (you'll see an old corragated water tank on the right just before the fork), then bear right toward Potato mountain. You'll hit a second fork where you will bear to the right and begin your steep ascent to the top of Potato mountain. You will encounter some steep section on this 1 mile climb over 12%, but the view at the top is worth it. After a break begin your descent retracing your steps to the for in the road by the old water tank. Bear right and do an easy 1/2 mile climb to the top where you will begin your desecent to the Marshall Canyon entrance. There are numerous routes through Marshall Canyon, some more challenging than others, but all eventually end at Emerald St. in La Verne. From there you can ride down to Baseline and go east to Towne Ave. and left to pickup up the Thompson Creek Bike Path which will take you back to the parking lot at Claremont Wilderness Park. Total ride time is about 2 to 2.5 hours depending on your conditioning. About 15 miles for the whole loop.

Summary: Inland Empire still blows the big one for singletrack riding:DRIVE Hey, why do you think we're going to war with Iraq?
Recommended Route: ammendment to my earlier review: at the very top of Burbank, go ahead and drop in at the beat up closed sign, I forget the name 'F*&%ked up and Rutted' maybe it should be, but it is still a good and challenging descent, drops you back near where you started climbing, go up again to the same place, get 'Itchy and Scratchy' (see earlier review), probably the best piece of singletrack in the park, drops you to the base again, go up (of course), hang the left instead of going to the top, go through the meadows, take the left up to the two power line towers and go to the cul-de-sac, look to the left, drop in, cross the road, head right back onto the ridge, keep dropping, and figure out how to get to the bike path and back to the Mills entrance, up again (do you hate me yet) to the very top, and go left into past the private sign, hang a one of two rights down into Marshall and right back up the singletrack to Cobalt and down home for an ass kicking loop that grabs most of the good singletrack this 'wilderness' park has to offer. Probably 17 mi. but I'm too old and cheap to buy a computer (they scare me!)
Other recommended trails in the same area: San Juan, Trabuco, Holy Jim (San Juan Capistrano), Santa Anna River Trail (Redlands) MT. Lowe Summit(Altadena, highly under-rated, unknown ride), Vettner, Hillyer, Chilao Loop with Silver Moc Ext. (La Canada, Rt 2)

Summary: When you're bored with the world.
Recommended Route: thru gate, first left up burbank canyon, right near top continuing up to crest, look on right for second old beaten sign, (used to say closed, first sign is a shorter trail guarded by big rocks that is less interesting) drop in to 'Itchy and Scratchy' single track over log drop, following ridge and sowewhat rutted steeps to rolling up and down nice trail back to near start. Very good trail but watch a few steep sections. Ends back on Burbank canyon fireroad above wide section, take a right and climb again. Hang a left at the fork and head left at Johnson meadows, by the powelines, look for a singletrack on left. Descend down over drops to a fire road heading left to Thompson bike path back to trail head, climb Burbank a third time again, head right at fork, left at private road sign, right at first or second singletrack, descend, right up canyon bottom to gate, left on road, descend to car. Just one idea, hey.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Inland empire has beat singltrack, drive!

Summary: This is a good workout and is good for training. The only problem is it's way to crowded on weekend mornings and it is short.I ride here 2 to 3 times a week.I prefer to go up Cobal and then descend back down through Marshall and ride to Baseline (yeah,I know it's the street)take this a short distance to Towne Ave and go north to Thompson Creek bike trail which will drop you off back at Clairmont again for about a 14 mile loop. Not really hard, but sure is fun.
Recommended Route: I like riding up Burbank side ,but both are ok.This is my local after work ride.I'll either do it 2 or 3 times. If I don't drop down into Marshall Canyon.
Other recommended trails in the same area: If I told you....I'd have to kill you.

Summary: This trail (fireroad) gets boring after a while but it is a good workout. It is only a 5 mile loop so many people ride it several times. Going up Burbank allows for many rest stops if you need them and the trails are in pretty good shape even after a rain. There are some ruts/erosion and loose ground right at the start of the Burbank trail, a nice washboard on the Cobal part trail where you're happy to have shocks, and a cool descent through the trees. It's not a technical trail, great for a novice rider who is in shape. Beware of people on the trail especially near the bottom of the trail and rattlesnakes sunning themselves in summer. It's a hot, sunny ascent in summer...go early.
Recommended Route: From parking lot cross stream then stay left at fork and ascend Burbank canyon. To do the Burbank/cobal loop, stay right at all the forks. You'll descend cobal canyon and can either cross the stream and go home or decide to do it again.
Other recommended trails in the same area: The first fork off Burbank leads to Johnson's pasture and the second fork off Burbank/cobal leads to Marshall canyon where you can find a ride for all skill levels (singletrack to fireroad). The roads marked private can be ridden on as long as you stay on the road and be courteous to other users! Visit a local bike shop for maps of the area.
