Chumash
12 reviews

From trailhead, Chumash climbs to the ridge of the Simi Hills. The trail is mostly single-track with some rocky and loose (sandy) sections. The top of the trail comes out at the Rocky Peak Trail. Go right to get to Hummingbird or Rocky Peak/118.

Summary:
This trail id awesome if you have a full suspension bike. The top has some nice technical parts, but not too difficult. It's mainly a fast singletrack the whole way down. There were some washed out spots and sandy areas last time I rode it about a week ago. And becareful coming down because there is a lot of exposure from the fires last October. Tons of hickers on this trail. All in all this is an awesome trail that a decent rider can do.

Recommended Route:
Up Rocky Peak Down Chumash. If you do this in the summer start real early because it gets hot real quick and there isn't any shade.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Hummingbird, Rocky Peak

Summary:
I just moved here from the bay area and this is the only trail I've found around here. Climbing up Chumash is nice since you can get into a good rythm, but I like it as a long, fast decent. Hummingbird is a great downhill if you've got the full-sus rig, but I'd rather climb it.

Recommended Route:
I like what one guy said--ride UP Hummingbird to the Rocky Peak Trail...a technical climb that will get your heart rate going. Then continue up the steep Rocky Peak to Chumash Trail and enjoy the long down hill back into town.

Anyone know any other rides around here? Let me know!

Much "Trail-work" this past year has removed technical places, this trail has changed from very challenging with a lot of rock gardens to smooth singletrack most of the way.

Summary:
This was my first time riding this trail. I thought the long Climb to the trailhead was well worth the fun going down. This is a great trail for all skill levels, the climb to get to the trailhead is the hardest part. The technical spots near the top are fun and the long single track downhills make it a great all around trail. I considermy self an intermediate level rider and had no problems with this trail.

Recommended Route:
We shuttled up to Rocky Peak and the 118, took RP fireroad to Chumash, Down Chumash, then Home from there on the streets

Summary:
I spent most of my life not far from here, but have since moved away. Now I only come down for holidays, but always work a ride in here. I like doing the loop above, even though the end of the ride is boring. Chumash is a lot of fun to go down. It is singletrack or pseudo-singletrack for much of the way. At the top there are some boulder-strewn sections that require technical skills, but nothing too scary. You do have to be careful to watch for hikers and bikers on the way down. There are few blind spots, so there are no excuses for scaring the hell out of someone on their way up. Speaking of up, that is another option, although I rarely do it. It is a nice climb. If you do go up, take the Hummingbird trail down.

Recommended Route:
I start at Rocky Peak Road at 118. Climb to the top, enjoy the view, ride down the ridge line until you get to Chumash. Take Chumash down, find your way back on the city streets to the Santa Susanna Pass and Rocky Peak Road.
