Chiquito Trail
4 reviews

This is a very physically demanding, technical single track that eventually connects to the San Juan Trail. Usually ridden out and back to avoid shuttle situation. This is NOT a ride for beginners. A constant series of challenging sections on the way up and a downhill ride home that demands your full attention.

Summary:
I recommend you this trail if you like a challenge. If you don't like any uphill, then this ride is not for you (even if you shuttle it). If you don't like challenging obstacles to test you, then this ride is not for you. If you are scared of rocks, loose terrain, mountain lions and cliffs, then this ride is not for you. If you can't yield to the occasional hiker, this ride is not for you. If you hate looking at beautiful scenery, this ride is not for you.

Summary:
Chiquito is a pretty fun trail until about a mile past where the waterfall. For the last 1-3? miles of descending, it was extremely overgrown and unreasonably technical. I consider myself a skilled rider that normally enjoys and accels at technical challenges, however I found the lower portion of this trail to be overgrown and extremely rocky to the point where I had to stop and walk my bike over way too many obstacles. I was a bit upset that I lost so much elevation walking my bike over insane big-rocky obstacles. To contrast that experience, the San Juan Trail is the most fun I've ever had on a mountain bike.

Recommended Route:
You can do as described above. I would highly recommend doing the San Juan Trail though instead of turning off onto Chiquito, unless you just want a new adventure.

Summary:
Overall this was a fun ride. First half of the trail was excellent with lots of good terrain and enough technical sections to keep you on your toes. Everyone was basically riding freeride bikes (bullits and the like) but that's not a necessity at all. No major drops or anything your normal full suspension bike can't handle. About half way down is a waterfall and a 1 mile climb starts shortly after this point. The climb has some steep, loose sections and a few hike a bike spots. A strong climber can probably clean the entire thing. After the climb the trail gets much more technical with some really tough spots that either require occasional dabs or really insane skills. Armor helps! About a 2 - 2 1/2 hour ride down but that was with a large group and quite a few stops to allow everyone to catch up. A good ride and I would do it again but would rather try the regular San Juan Trail first as I've heard that's more fun (faster with less super technical sections). Don't do this ride on a downhill bike. One of our group did and he was hurting. Trail was too tight in many spots and had enough climbing to really hurt on a DH bike.

Recommended Route:
I tagged along with a group of 12 local riders. We parked at the candy store and then shuttled to the top. Can't give any more specific directions since this was my first time out there and I was hung over big time.
