Chesebro

All the trails in Chesebro are open to bikes. This is a great park for beginning riders. The terrain is hilly with Oak and Sycamore trees in the low lying areas. The start of Chesebro trail (dirt road) is flat for a couple miles and ends in the Sulfur Springs singletrack. Sulfur Springs is more of an intermediate ride. If you follow Sulfur Springs to the end (2 miles or so) you will come to Shepherds Flats. If you make a left at Shepherds Flats you'll be on the connector singletrack (not sure if it even has a name) to Palo Comado Trail. If you make a right it leads to Baleen Wall Trail. Both Baleen and Palo Comado are dirt roads, but they are much steeper than Chesebro. There are singletrack trails all over this park but it would take too long to mention them all. I'll just describe my favorite loop. You start the loop by going up the Modelo connector trail from the upper parking area. At the top of the hill you go left on Modelo. Follow this trail until it T's and go left again. This trail will switch between single and double track for a mile or so and drops you at the bottom of Palo Comado, go right. You will follow this trail (dirt road) for about three miles. On the right you will see a singletrack (I think its called Dead Cow but there is no sign) you can go up it or continue on Palo Comado. Dead Cow mirrors Palo Comado but Dead Cow has more climbing. If you stay on Palo Comado, you will go less than 2 miles and you'll see another singletrack on the right. Go there. This is the connector to Sulfur Springs. After 200 feet you will see Dead Cow single track on the right. Just stay to the left. If you came up Dead Cow, make a right on to the connector singletrack where Dead Cow ends. Follow the connector singletrack for a mile or two to Shepherd Flats and make a right on Sulfur Springs trail. Sulfur Springs is great fun. It has rock, dirt and sand sections with a couple of creek crossings. Follow it for about 3 or 4 miles until you see Modelo on your right and go up it. After climbing less than a mile, the trails will intersect (it should look familiar, you were here earlier) go left. After another mile or so you'll see the parking area and youll go right down the singletrack you came up earlier.

Summary:
Trails are open and in really good condition since the fires scorched the area. Main canyon trail from the parking lot is not burned very much. once you get out to sulpher springs and into what I consider the back of the park, it looks like Mars! Green buds are starting to grow - but i would say 95% of everthing you see is still black. Amazing. Still a fun trail - one of my favorites.

Be sure to respect the areas that are closed for vegitation and yield to hikers and horses.

Recommended Route:
see above.

Summary:
Most fun Mountain bike trails I've ridden without the aid of a gondola.

Recommended Route:
First of all, bikes are allowed, and there are tons of them there, and the rangers if they are there, expect bikes. I would take the trail all the way to the back of cheseboro canyon through the shady single track canyon up and down through sulpher springs, then bust a right at the end of the canyon and either take the single track all the way to Ahmanson Ranch and back down to Las Virgenes, if you are really in the mood for some haulin ass downhill single track madness. When you get to the T in the end of the canyon you can make a right and go right again on the Cheseboro ridge trail and take this back to the begining if you are in the mood for some fireroad up up up and down down down down down down. down.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Sycamore Canyon, Topanga State Park at S. end of Reseda Blvd.

Summary:
From Simi Peak take the trail to your right down about 1.5 miles.

Recommended Route:
Any of the routes mentioned are good but for advanced riders, Dead Cow is a must. Vince and Kenn have discussed it in their posts and it is one of the funner singletracks anywhere in the greater LA area. If you enjoy technical rocky stair stepped rides this is for you, though beginners and intermediates who do not know how to stay off their front brakes should avoid it. Also , I would definitely recommend against riding it at night like Vince did--it's too trecherous at night--just ask Vince and his wrist.
