Up. Straight up. It's all fireroad up. And steep. Basically, go to the very end of Canyon Acres and go left around the gate.
The dirt starts at the second gate, and goes up fast. Follow it and no matter which routes you take, you'll eventually get to the top.
You can go down the other side, into Aliso Woods for lots more fun dirt, or simply turn around and fly back down. But, if you're gonna rip, do it early in the AM. Lots and lots of people walk their dogs on this dirt, especially after work, and if you hit a dog or person, you can pretty much count on getting this trail closed.
That said, it is worth getting up really early to ride down at mach speed. You will catch air. You will slide through wide fast turns. And you will eat the gate at the bottom if you forget about it.
There is also a singletrack option that is lots of fun to go down. Just look for it at the top of the climb. Same dog rules apply.
From town, East up the Canyon. (Broadway) Pass the bike shop, pass the Art Festival, and take a right at the next stoplight. Canyon Acres. (Don't park on this street, unless you're a resident, you'll definitely get towed.)

Hey Astoria. Dude, what is with the assumption??? First off, I am not a staff reviewer, but a Laguna Beach rider just like you. And, like most riders, have respect for people's safety and happiness. Cross Country Rider
Summary: I live on Canyon Acres and use trail for both walking and riding. The ride (or walk) is steep and at times slippery but will keep/get you in top shape. After the Feb/March rains fairly deep trenches resembling crevasses form due to run off. These last until maintenance crews get up there at the end of the rainy season. The trenches can be extensive depending on the season so care should be taken during these months.
I wouldn't blast my way down on this one on any day due to the fact that it's such a great neighborhood walking trail. Too bad the staff reviewer worries more about a trail being closed than causing bodily harm to an innocent walker. That kind of attitude is what gives riders a sometimes deserved bad “smell”.
If you disagree, take a walk/hike sometime on a steep switchbacked trail with riders screaming down on their own personal adrenaline rush. I've actually had a rider head for me for a "fun scare:.. something I'd never even contemplate doing on my own rides.

Summary: Instead of just taking the fire road down, use the singletraks that keep cutting across. This is very fun, with some steep sections, nice switchbacks, and one near-vertical chute that's 10ft long (I call this slider rock). Careful if it hasn't rained in a while. Once you pass slider rock, it can be very silty, and usually isn't any fun after that.
Recommended Route: Shuttle. Drop one car off as close as you can to the corner of Canyon Acres & Laguna Canyon Rd. Shuttle up to top of the world, then come down.
