West Ridge

It's a rolling topography...not too technical. Go down Westridge untill you hit a road...cross the road and go down the fairly steep trail on the other side. about 2-3 miles down this trail you will see a parking lot on the right. (this is the fun part) Go down the little hill to the right, into the parking lot. at the end of the parking lot there are some logs...Jump the logs and you will find a ton of single track. go down the first streach...there is a little creek at the bottom. Go across it a and turn right...go up the hill...after a few hundred feet there should be a bridge on your right, keep going streight, i think eventually you have the option of turning right up a steep hill, stay left. Keep going until you hit a paved road. go up that untill you see a drinking fountain..there is a clearing with picnic tables. Look around there and there are several single track trail heads...they all lead to the bottom where you started. Hope this helps.

Trail Directions
Look up Redwood Park...Its on most maps. Here is the easiest way to get there if it is not on your map: Go to Saint Mary's College (On almost any map...Off of Saint Mary's road in Moraga...And very Well marked off of the highway), there is a road that leads up to the actual buildings of saint Mary's College. Coming out of this road, turn left. Go streight for a while until you hit a stop light. At the light turn left. Go streight on this road until you enter a somewhat forested area. The next intersection you see will be a "Y" intersection. turn right. Go up the windy road until you hit another intersection. (the road is fairly long) At this intersection turn left...go streight for a little longer and you will see "redwood park." This is the trail head...you can go Right, to west ridge, or left to east ridge. I like west ridge better.

Summary:
West ridge is a very high quality trail what it lacks in single track it makes up in balls out speed and steep terrain. The lower section is the bomb i love the loose sand and the gnarly turns there are a few rock sections and small drop offs that will defiantly wake you up.If you a beginner on a hard tail stick to chabot but if your advanced its still good fun I Dont care if i ride it a thousand times i dig it

Recommended Route:
i usually start at the lower redwood gate and proceed right up from the lower area to redwood park or for a long loop from the lower trail head and either take the east ridge to skyline/redwood cut along the fire road where the space center and drop in to westrige and bomb down to the car again

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Chabot,China camp Wilder

Summary:
It really starts at the Skyline Gate and runs south from the parking lot. Mostly walkers, joggers, and dogs until the Moon Gate and not much fun. Once you get through the top part of Joaquin Miller and cross to behind the Chabot Science Center near the Range it starts to get fun. Simply put it drops almost 800 ft in less than two miles to the fish ladder through some easy stuff and some tough stuff following the nose of the ridge, then doubling back north on its east flank into Redwood Canyon. Don't take it lightly. There are some modest riders, few hikers/joggers, and some horses. It is one of the best downhills on this side of the bay.

Recommended Route:
Should be ridden as part of a loop with East Ridge, or Joaquin Miller. It is only 3 miles long where it counts.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Chabot

Summary:
The description that is given above suggests that West Ridge trail turns into single track. However, it doesn't really... at the point where the rider turned right and went past some logs, and then down into some single-track, he was actually entering into Joaquin Miller Park (see other entries about JMP). Also, his distance was quite exaggerated... the ride he described is 4-5 miles- not 15-20! The west ridge trail actually continues straight for about another 1/4 mile past the logs then crosses over to the east side of Skyline Road. Stay left at the Graham/West ridge trail intersections (which is in a nice redwood grove). Then have a wild roller-coaster style downhill for about 2 miles til it empties out into lower redwood park (last 1/2 mile is VERY steep!). Most people take Canyon Trail to East Ridge Trail to return to the Skyline Gate staging area.

Recommended Route:
see below

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Graham and Dunn trails... I like to ride through Joaquin Miller and then get on Dunn Trail on the other side of skyline. or just catch graham in the redwood grove and take it downhill to dunn. both are fun!
