Old Haul Road

Average Rating:    (5 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 1

Located in Pescadero Creek County Park, the Old Haul Road is an old railroad grade that was used for hauling lumber out during the logging operations that took place there in the 19th century. The OHR bores a tunnel through dense, second growth redwoods and offers a cool, shady and mellow ride on rolling fire road. Surface is hardpack, loose on hardpack, compacted gravel, shallow sand and compacted sand.

Summary:
This trail is absolutely beautiful. I went up here on a weekday afternoon and had the entire place to myself. The trail starts out with some rollers, steep but very short plus one more very steep one near the end. Otherwise, it's a very slow and mellow climb. You probably won't realize at first how far you've climbed until you start downhill. People who show disdain at all but the most gnarly singetrack will be disappointed with this trail, but if you're a beginner looking to get your feet wet or you're just looking for a mellow ride through some gorgeous forest then this is your trail. The most technical skill you'll need out here is dodging horse flop. There was a virtual road apple garden near the trail head. But don't just stare at the road, be on the look out for wildlife as well. I saw a bobcat! This trail used to connect to Portola State Redwoods and the ranger station, but as of this review that connector trail is closed.

To get there, take 280 to 84 and go east. Once you get into Pescadero, look for Pescadero Creek Road and turn left. Keep right to stay on Pescadero Creek and follow it until you start to see signs for YMCA camps. After the Oakland YMCA camp sign, look for Wurr Road on the left. Turn left and almost immediately you will see the parking area for Pescadero Creek County Park.

Recommended Route:
It's a straight shot, out and back.
