Mt. Burdell

Average Rating:    (2.67 of 5)

Nice view from the top, good climb.

Mt. Burdell has a mix of fireroads (which are legal for mountain bikes) and single track trails (which are not legal).

Mountain bikers are only allowed on the fireroads. Sheriff’s deputies and rangers will issue citations if bikers are found on the single track trails on Mt. Burdell

Summary:
As previously stated, if you live in Novato this is about the only hill to climb. There are numerous trailheads around San Marin, which ever you take, just look up and pedal to the top. Its a steep fireroad climb up and an easy bomb down. The view from the top is nice on a clear day and there is very little traffic on the top 1/2 of the mountain. It can be a pain to have to stop and open the cattle gates on the way down. If you live in Novato and don't want to get in your car to go for a ride, this hill will have to do.

Recommended Route:
Up San Carlos FR, left on Middle Burdell FR, up Cobblestone to the top of the Mt. Old Quarry Trail (illegal) is the most challenging way down. For those who obey the law of the land, take Deer Camp FR to Middle Burdell FR down the mt.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
China Camp and Annadel, its hard to compare these places with measly Mt. Burdell. Unless you are lazy like me after work, get in the car, leave Novato, and find a real trail.

Summary:
This ride is a just a steady 6 mile climb upto the towers. It's good for trying to get into some shape. Hardcore guys should race up this hill. The views are impressive. It's not challenging for technical riders. Unless you decide to take a dirt turn at 30+ mph. This trail is unsupervised. If you live in Novato and need a quick fix, then hit this trail.

Recommended Route:
There many variations for this trail. I recommend starting at the fire road across from the car pool next to the Burger King. You can take the hamilton exit and cross over the freeway. Once over the freeway, park. You can't miss the fire road. This trail has many variations from ignacio, Indian Valley, farside of Novato by the lakes and San Marin.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
China Camp

Summary:
All fire road that's mostly moderate climbing with a few "grinder" steep sections - none of the grinds are very long, just little flair ups. You are exposed to the sun the whole ride. The view from the top is beautiful but the views on the ride to the top and back down again are not - just dry grass with an occasional oak tree. There are a few rocky sections that, combined with the slope, can make the climbing difficult for weak climbers and a nuisance for "uphill haters". Watch out for a few small extra-gravelly patches on your descent - your front wheel may get washed out when you lean the bike over for the fast corners.

Recommended Route:
San Andreas Ave side trailhead to the top of Burdell, then descend down to the Partridge Knolls side, turn around and summit again. Starting fom the Partridge Knolls side and doing it in reverse is fine as well.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Novato Does not have anything else worth while.
