Monte Bello

Average Rating:    (3.4 of 5)

There are various trails to do here. All of them have decent climbs and usually some decent technical sections.

Grab a map at the parking lot and explore.

MonteBello connects with both Saratoga Gap and Stevens Creek Canyon. One of my favorite rides is a shuttle starting at Saratoga Gap, through Monte Bello and ending up down in Stevens Canyon. Takes about an hour and a half and includes lots of downhill.

Summary:
Monte Bella is great if you are looking to build endurance. I love to link the trails here with those in Russian ridge, Saratoga gap, Longs Ridge and even Windy Hill for an extra epic opportunity. The canyon trail is the best trail in the Monte Bella section, with a few very short barely technical sections you can move fast over the several miles of trail. Bella vista is fast but lacks any real excitement beyond that of pure speed and the occasional off camber corner. The climb out onto Skyline down near highway nine can be pretty brutal. Both options are steep and relentless. The southern uphill only trail has a good bit of sand towards that top that makes hike-a-bike a great option. Do the climb, cross Skyline and fine the Peter's creek loop for a fast and rewarding single track excursion.

Recommended Route:
Start at LR01 (in the saratoga gap area). Follow the hickory oaks trail to the Northwest, where it joins up with a little fire road section. There are several options before you make it to peter's creek trail, but you generally want to stay on the ridge and get in as much single track as possible. About a mile or two into the ride a right hand trail comes up -- this is peter's creek. This is one of the best peices of single track in the park... must do. Take this to the Ridgeline trail... follow this, staying parallel with highway 35. The ridge trail is a mixture of single track and fire road. It is a fun way to go a long distance in a short time (aka FAST). You will have to go through a few gate and into the christmas tree farm. Go down to the fire road. this take you to the horse shoe lake and alpine road if you let it. Cross alpine and fire off some quick trails at Russian ridge. Look for Ancient Oaks to hawk trail (if you have time follow it down to Rapley ranch road.. this is great single track) Link up with Cloud's rest trail, which is a short downhill on the east side of the 35... to the meadow trail to alpine rd. Make a right on alpine.Back to Monte Bella.

Summary:
If you're looking for a good work out this is a good trail area. Lots of good climbs. Though it's technical difficulty leaves a great deal to be desired. Lots of shade, a few creek crossings, depending on your route. Occassionally to many people. A 15 mph speed limit. The trail is in it's best condition in mid-late spring.

Recommended Route:
From Monte Bello parking lot take a short single track down to Canyon Trail. Canyon Trail is mostly a mellow downhill fire roadish trail that'll keep you on your toes but probably won't thrill you. At 3.2 miles from the parking lot turn right down a short single track to Grizzly Flat. Now for 2.8 miles huff and puff your way up Grizzy Flat trail and wonder why you're riding what the smart people are riding down. Grizzly Flat ends on 35 so cross 35 and wind your way down to Ridge Trail. Ridge Trail offers alot of variation. Anything from really steep downhill on fireroads to some pleasent shaded single track. Every corner brings something new. Ride ridge up through the christmas tree farm and down to horseshoe lake. If you're feeling beat you can ride over to the parking lot, hop on 35 and do a road ride back the parking lot. If Grizzly Flat didn't drain you turn left at horseshoe lake and continue on ridge trail over the hill to Alpine Pond. From here you can get back on Page Mill Road and cool down with a 2 mile road ride back to the parking lot. This whole route falls within the map you can pick up at the Monte Bello parking lot and the area is very well signed.

Summary:
One of my favorite rides. If you like singletrack, sweeping views, and a few creek crossings thrown in, then you'll like this place. Not too technical, but keeps you on your toes. Recommended for intermediate riders. Watch out for the hikers! Bella Vista isn't dead.. they just smoothed it out a little, and widened it slightly. Still the same great singletrack.

Recommended Route:
Up Montebello Road, down the canyon, then stevens canyon road back to the car

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Fremont Older, Saratoga Gap
