Marin City Death Climb

Average Rating:    (3 of 5)

i can think of no other reason to ride this trail except to inflict torment upon yourself. it is steep and rutted and often covered with wet fallen branches during the winter rainy season in northern california. only the most powerful and technically adept riders will find themselves cleaning all of this climb. descending it makes even less sense, since it is almost always slippery and leads into a ghetto. this climb is best utilized in adding an extra dollop of misery, frustration and stupidity to a marin headlands loop.

This is one of those trails I like knowing about because I commute to Sausalito from SF, and it's nice to switch it up a bit.

This trail is steep, but I've done it on my single speed (33x20) in the rain. It literally begins in the back parking lot of Marin City's housing projects. One of the more tame projects in the Bay Area, it still has the distinction of the nickname "the Jungle" among residents. 2pac grew up in these housing projects. It's a fun way to get from Mike's Bikes in Sausalito to Alta trail without climbing the paved road Donahue.

A much better ride would be Tennessee Valley>Marincello>Bobcat/Alta Cutoff>Alta>etc, etc..

The Orchard Fire Trail as this fire road is properly named is a fun one to have in yr quiver of trails.. You never know when you'll need it!

Uphill only, this trail sucks downhill. A rutted plummet to the parking lot. Better to continue down Alta and drop into Oakwood Valley.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Oakwood Valley Decent, SCA trail, Miwok, Old Springs, Coastal.. Any many more with no name.
