Big Rock
2 reviews
 3.5 of 5

this trail can be used as a continuation of the Big Rock Ridge trail described in the Review section. the trail starts at the saddle of lucas valley road pass where the big rock sits. it is well marked due to the fact it is a part of the Bay Trail and is single track all the way to the ridge. the trails starts gently upward through a grassy hillside then into stands of oak. once through a fence you''ll encounter a mix of grassy hillside and oak stands but on a much more severe incline. a series of switchbacks are employed to carry you ever higher and eventually to the fire road. not a long trail but one of the most unique you''ll find anywhere

Summary:
I live about 5 minutes from this trail. Its a pretty sweet trail if you're looking for a quick ride. It can be done in about an hour or so at a moderate speed. Not too technical at all, My 55 year old mother does it all the time ( but she's tough) You're going uphill the whole way and can hook up with a fire road to get the very top if you want the extra work out (and view). The way down is nice and "flowy". They'll be hikers and cows so watch out.

Recommended Route:
Start at the "Big Rock" and start cranking up. You can either turn around when the single track turns to fire road or you can keep going until you reach the radio towers. Just turn around and head back the way you came. Don't go down the back side into Novato though. I've seen people get chased off by guys with guns.

Summary:
Alright, this trail is pretty sweet. Anyone who is looking for a longer, harder ride should do the trail at least twice. It starts right on Lucas Valley road and goes to a pretty tough climb up to the top of this massive hill. The winding trail isn't predictable, so watch out for hikers. Then once your reach the top, you just turn around and hit the sweetest, flowyest, and smoothest downhill ever. Check it out.

Recommended Route:
Up and back, the same way.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Tamarancho Boy Scout camp! (Best in the area.)
