Fire Road and single track, difficulty ranges from
"take the kids" to "see the face of God and piss yourself as He turns you and your aluminum steed into
a sticky red ball..." Skeggs is also known as El Corte
de Madera OSP. the terrain is 2nd growth redwood forest
surrounding some supurb single track and some awesome
Kamakaze down hills. if you just want to do a quick
8 mile loop Skeggs'll have something just for you.
If you want a multimile vomitfest all you need to do
is link a couple of loops together. Single track lovers should be sure to check out: Fir trail, Manzanita trail, Giant salamander trail, Resolution
trail. And an evil, nasty faceplant waiting to happen,
called "Nose Break" (this track is unmarked however it is leagal as of this writing 1/2/99) ask someone
at the trailhead where this litte ass bite is located,
if said person is bleeding, he probably knows.
As for you fire road lovers you need to try: Timberview trail, (high speed and big woop de woops make for some geat fun in the air) Gordon mill trail
is cool to- BUT - it leads directly to the bottom of
Timberview, which unless you're Ned Overend, or like pain, and lactic acid build up, is better downhill.
other good fireroads include, Tifoni trail, the first
halves of Fir trail, Methuselah trail and El Corte
Madera Trail. you can obtain a trail map at the trail
head for no charge. Helmets are manditory and the speed limit is 15 mph. on weekends and nice days watch out for hikers, horses and park rangers
From San Fransisco: Run down I-280 to 92 west, take 92-west to skyline blvd. turn onto southbound skyline for about ten miles. Skeggs point is the vista point,on the left hand side of the road. (You'll recognize it by the long rock retaining wall.) DO NOT TURN LEFT INTO THE PARKING LOT FROM S. BOUND SKYLINE THIS IS ILLEGAL, AND ON WEEKENDS USUALLY THERE IS A BAD ASSCOP JUST WAITING FOR SOME POOR SLOB, FAT TIRE DIRT MONKEY TO MAKE THAT ILLEGAL LEFT TURN, DRIVE DOWN SKYLINE FOR A QUARTER MILE AND USE THE TURNOUT TO FLIP A BITCH. (there is also limited parking at said turnout so you can access the southern area of the park.)
Summary: Incredible EPIC altering mood ride that will leave a smile on your face just thinking about it. Highly recommend not to ride a hard tail & not to do it alone, if you could find yourself in jam! Most fun I've had in a long long time! Check out FIR & Resolution, maps available right there.
Recommended Route: FIR, Manzanita and Resolution!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Pacifica's Boyscout

Summary: Skeggs can kick your ass ... sometimes down a steep hill.
So after barely climbing out of the reaches of hell ... a friend unwittingly bails off his bike and got real intimate with the hillside somewhere along Blue Blossom.
Lesson learned:
1. Don't go riding on days when weather exceed 100.
2. Don't try to beat the heat by going @ 7:30pm.
3. Don't try out new trails after 7:30pm.
4. Don't attempt to fly over obstacles on new trails @ 8:46pm.
5. If you're ever dumb enough to hop over things on a new trail @ 8:46pm on a day hot enough to boil a monkey's bum ... be sure to eat something other than a few oysters prepared by an unemployed chef.
Summary: Hey what else can you say? Skeggs is great – probably the best all around MTB riding in the Bay Area. The trail map is deceiving though - this place is huge and it is easy to take wrong turns here, even for us locals. Lots of up and down, but beautiful, well-marked, shaded single-track and fire roads - roots, rocks, sharp drops, blind turns, fast rollers, brutal climbs, wicked downhills, creek crossings - Skeggs has it all.
I usually ride here on weekdays and some days I can grind for three hours and not see anyone. Weekends of course bring out more people, but that's the norm on most Bay Area trails. This place is so big though, that it never feels crowded. Trails can get very muddy after winter rains - not the best place to go for a mid winter ride, unless it hasn't rained for several weeks (a good time to dust off the road bike).
Definitely not a place for inexperienced riders - Skeggs can be harsh for the uninitiated. Newbies should look elsewhere. You need to be in great shape to really enjoy riding here (unless you stick to the trails near Skyline Blvd). Mostly intermediate to advanced, some technical trails, but lots and lots of climbing to reclaim all that awesome downhill. Skeggs is part of MROSD, so beware of radar especially on weekends. Be sure to slow down for the few hikers.
You can spend an hour or all day here, depending on your abilities (kudos to anyone who can crank here all day). However, riding one mile here is equivalent to riding two miles at a lot of other parks. It can also be a full 10 degrees cooler here than riding the South Skyline region between Page Mill Rd & Hwy 9. However, it’s that cool summer fog that is responsible for all the beautiful redwood trees.
Full sus or hard tail – that’s a tough call here. All the climbing favors a hard tail, but some of the rougher descents favor full sus – really boils down to a personal preference for the day. Anything will work here though, it's just all so good!
Recommended Route: One of many routes, but a good two hour ride: CM02 - Sierra Morena - Fir - Resolution - El Corte Madera - North Leaf - Methuselah - Manzanita - Timberview - Crosscut - Crossover – Gordon Mill - CM02. Mix and match to create endless loops. Giant Salamander and ECDM trails are open again.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Upper Stevens Creek, Monte Bello, Russian Ridge, Skyline Ridge, Long Ridge, Gap

Summary: (First time riding this today)
Not what I would call rolling trails. But a beautiful trail system, some really excellent single-but-really-double-track trails, decently technical rocky downhills, but a LOT OF CLIMBING. More than I care for being an intermediate XC rider that prefers rollers.
Trailheads are off of Skyline which rides the ridgeline. So the park runs down the side of the mountain. It seems that it's mostly downhill into the park, uphill all the way back. This park used to be a dirtbike park back in the day, so they had a motor to get back up the hill.
Recommended Route: Parked @ Skeggs (CM01 on map).
Pedaling @ 1:45pm. Tafoni to Fir trail, right into Resolution for single/double track downhill technical fun. Rocky sandstone parts, forested d/h parts, beautiful & fun. Left on El Corte Madera Creek, rode till end, 45 min ride time so far.
North Leaf doubletrack to Methuselah. IIRC, North Leaf was rolling hills, and Methuselah had some grinding u/h, but both had lots of beautiful/deep canopy that reminded me of Enchanted @ Wilder, just more tiring. Methuselah to Giant Salamander, (met up with 2 park workers coming out of Salamander that said "You two are going to be the first to ride this trail since we closed it 2 years ago!". Score! We rode it uphill, the new bridges were very nice, the trail was smooth and fresh. But lots of tiring uphill sections.
Then Timberview fireroad uphill to Manzanita, which was uphill doubletrack grind with some decently technical rocky parts, but still fun and cool looking terrrain.
Then Fir u/h along the ridge back to the parking lot at about 4:45. Tired and done.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Wilder Ranch, Pogonip, Saratoga Gap
