Bobcat 2
3 reviews
 4 of 5

newly cut singletrack. the surface is still loose, having yet to be packed down by horses or bikes. lots of small turns and dips, which make the descent very interesting. climbing bobcat 2 is probably a middle chainring-big cog affair if you're fresh and granny gear if you're returning from Tam. this trail has no signs acknowledging its existance, thus the legality of using this trail is a little ambiguous. the trail seems to have been first used by equestrians to take advantage of shade from the trees on the west side of the trail--and to avoid riders descending the bobcat fire road at high speeds. daytime or peak period use of this trail in the downhill direction by mountain bikes is strongly discouraged.

Summary:
bobcat 2 adds an entirely new perspective to what is a generally run-of-the-mill marin headlands/stables loop from san francisco. it's singletrack and all singletrack, whichs adds a little habenero sauce to the genuinely stultifying and painful fire road climb--or the autobahn-on-dirt bobcat fire road descent.

Recommended Route:
trail is to the SHARP LEFT approximately a quarter mile from the top on the descent and on the right, and on a GENTLE RIGHT about an eighth of a mile from the bottom on the climb. if you're stupid enough to try the descent during the daytime, be sure to BEAR RIGHT when the trail splits near the bottom, after the big rock outcropping between this trail and the fire road. the LEFT FORK dumps you almost dead into the stables, thus that part of the trail is probably not a good place to be seen on a mountain bike.
