ROCKSPRINGS-LAGUNITAS TO THE TOP

This is a 25 mile ride with views, all types of terrain and fewer people than on the other local trails. Start at the base of Greene park and head up past Phoenix Lake and around till you end up at a junction, take Fish Gulch, the middle trail. It's steep but worth it, because it will get you to lake Lagunitas quickest. At around .75 mile you'll reach a road, keep going to the top and head left to Lake Lagunitas. Go counter-clockwise around the lake, starting at the spillway. About 500 yards is a fork in the road, go right this is Rock Springs Lagunitas Fireroad. Get into granny and start chugging, this is it for about 3 miles mostly uphill. Keep riding up to Potrero Meadows, and as you pass on the left of the meadow, there will be a "t", make a right, this is Laurel Dell Fireroad take this all the way out to Panoramic Hwy. This is mostly exhilarating downhill with very few, next to no one on the trail. At Panoramic Hwy. go left and enjoy the viewthe ocean, Bolinas, Pt. Reyes, San Francisco, Half Moon Bay and on clear cold winter mornings, Monterey! As you wind around Panoramic Hwy. you will come to a big intersection with a parking lot, go left up Ridgecrest Blvd. this will take you up to the top of Mount Tam. Just before Tam's parking lot is a trail on the north side called, Eldridge Grade Fireroad take this down for another technical at first but blazing at the end downhill to the lakes below and back to where you started from. This trail is a workout but well worth it because it is usually empty and challenging in every aspect. Riders who like to climb will find the trail great because you can set your own pace and there are just enough flat spots in between the climbs to keep from stopping.
Start by getting to the town of Ross or San Anselmo from hwy 101. Look on a map to find Ross Commons (a good parking area) or downtown San Anselmo (4-hour parking) and then find Natalie Greene park in Ross.
Summary: Rock Springs is quite a bumpy trail so you're gonna look like a scared monkey on meth by the end of the FR if ur on a rigid goin' down as fast as I can say "Weiner Schniztel". I'm on one of dem full sussys (cannondale '04 scalpel 2000) it's not a downhill bike, but it rips down this here Rock Springs. It's my personal favorite FR for goin' down. No jumps or anything of that sort really, it's just an AWESOME fire road. It's worth a try to anyone, as long as they're interested in the sport
Recommended Route: Up Eldrige (sucks goin' down it), down Rock Springs (sucks goin' up it), and down Rocky Ridge.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Rocky Ridge, Pine Mtn. Loop, Repack

Summary: This is a beautiful ride. It is not technical, so if you are looking for technical, this is not it. All fire road to W. Ridgecrest where it is paved to the top. Rock Springs will be a grind for about 20 min. up to Potrero meadows with a few breaks. If you have not been riding much or only ride a road bike, you will be challenged. The payoff is that this trail and Laurel Dell trail are empty even on weekends except for just a few of us. It's great. The scenery and views are well worth it too!!! My rating is 4 but would be 5 if there were some legal single trac for us up there. Take your out of town friends on this ride if they can climb. They will enjoy it.
Recommended Route: Take the route suggested or turn right at W.Ridgecrest and follow to alpine dam.

Summary: Starting at Lake Lagunitas, head around the lake couterclockwise, and after the third water crossing, head right on Lakeview. Ride about 1/2 mile to Eldridge Grade, and head up to the top. At the top, take a detour to the summit and soak up the view, then backtrack and ride on the road (Ridgecrest) for about 2 miles. After about a mile downhill, look to your right for a fire road. Take that road uphill, then back down and around Potrero Meadows. Next is Rock Springs, which is alot better down than up. After about a mile or so, take the hairpin turn to your left. This is Rocky Ridge. There is more up and down, great views, then a great downhill to Bon Tempe lake. Form there, you can cross the dam, take the fire road to the right, and hook up again with trails either back to Lagunitas, Deer Park in Fairfax, or up Bolinas-Fairfax road to the Pine Mountain loop.
Recommended Route: The Rock Springs loop is a good one, but there is a better way to cover much of the same territory.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Pine Mountain loop; Bolinas Ridge

Summary: This is a correction to my first posting where I say the road "Panoramic Highway" is actually "West Ridgecrest Blvd." Other than that, it is correct.
Recommended Route: Rocksprings-Lagunitas To the Top!
