Repack

This is a historical trail is home to such mountain bike riders as Gary Fischer, Tom Ritchey,Joe Breezer, Otis Guy and other pioneers of the sport. They would drop this technical fire road and have to "Repack" their burnt out brakes. The trail is steep and rocky with smooth lines(if you ride it correctly) but the punishment for a bad line can be painfull. The often dusty conditions can be bad if you ride with a fast friend.
Summary: As one of the OG racers on Repack, I know nearly every rock on the route. Since it received a major grooming a few years ago, it has lost any technical challenge it had when it was badly eroded and rutted. Anyone can ride down it, which was at least in part, the point even back at the dawn of mountain bike time. You didn't have to be a total expert to descend the hill, so anyone could get into the race.
Getting down Repack fast is another story. None of the riders who gave the trail bad reviews got on their bikes at the top with their friends watching and heard a guy count down, then let them go to see what they could do. If you want to ride that hill in less than five minutes, you will have to scare yourself.
Pay no attention to the fools who say there is a fifteen mile an hour speed limit on Repack.
Recommended Route: There are two ways to get to Repack.
You can ride the paved road from Fairfax past the golf course and take the Pine Mountain Truck Road. The accomplishes about half the climbing on a paved road, with another mile on dirt. Getting to Repack you will have to make two technical climbs, where the success rate of riders who can "clean" them is less than half.
The second route is all dirt, from White Hill School in Fairfax, under Sir Francis Drake and up the single track, past the edge of Tamarancho, around White's Hill and up a couple of steep climbs to Woodacre Ridge, then another mile to Repack.
Whichever way you go, plan on 45 minutes to an hour from Fairfax to Repack, then ten minutes to get back.

Summary: I have no idea why other reviewers are so harsh about this trail. I rode it recently in very inclement weather, the whole 22miles of it... up the road from Fairfax and back down from Mt Tam on the trail. I feel it had everything an epic ride should. Brutally technical ascents, descents river crossings, mud, rocks, double and singletrack, six other riders in the three hours my brother and I were on the trail, great views, a great time all in all. Everyone is so damn keen on prefab CAD designed singletrack or putting their bikes on a chairlift just to coast down. Those elements have their time and place. This is an XC trail. With that in mind, I have to say, it's one of the best.

Summary: Always a workout to climb but worth it Normally you can either work your heart rate on gentle climbs (low resistance) with a high cadence or you can work your muscles on steep climbs with a low cadence but lots of resistance. Repack works both your muscles and your heart rate, and so, it should definately be climbed evry now and then for fitness building. As far as descending it, well, DH is not my strong suit but Repack seems to be just another fire road descent. There are more exciting DH routes in the Bay Area - Annadale Park in Santa Rosa for example.
Recommended Route: Cascade to Repack to the top of Pine Mountain.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Pine Mountain Loop, Railroad Grade, Eldridge

Summary: repack must have been really different on gary fisher's klunker. otherwise, it's just another wide, fast fire road in marin. those of you who give this place five tires must be inbred simps who have never really ridden anywhere else. don't make the left turn onto this fire road if you're riding pine mountain--the road climb back to your car just is'nt worth it. two tires, one on the merit of repack's historical significance.
Recommended Route: incorporate this ride into your Pine Mountain Loop
