Pine Mountain Loop

Long, rocky, steep, granny-abusing uphill. Then a long, fast, big ring, roller-coaster downhill. Followed by another long climb back out. All wide, rocky fireroads. Connects to famous Repack trail
From San Francisco, take 101 north to Sir Francis Drake exit. Follow Sir Francis Drake to town of Fairfax. Turn left into Fairfax downtown area past a large "island" to Broadway or Center Blvd. (same street) which parallels Sir Francis Drake, then turn left onto Bolinas Rd. up, past golf course, to trailhead.
Summary: Some tough climbs on loose rock/gravel spread out through the whole trail but you may want to warm up before starting as you get these really early. The views are unbelievable & it's relatively uncrowded, esp late in the afternoon. Make sure to bring layers for changing weather & lots of water/fuel.
Recommended Route: Some ppl have posted about off-piste trails... if you can find them they are well worth the effort tho you may want to get better health insurance.

Summary: I road Pine Mountain to Repack with the Thanksgiving group. That was fun. I'm not much on XC. For me, XC is like a spinning class. If you're into endurance stuff you'll like this ride. What makes it "technical" is that it is relentlessly steep over loose rock. It's a good place for a light bike and a heart-pumping workout. Other than that, it isn't very technical or challenging. t's hard for me to rate the downhills. Repack is mostly double-track and fire road. Again, it isn't really technical...just steep. It's a good place for a DH bike, a compression suit and a full-face helmet. Or you can kind of ride your brakes down the trail.
The more I ride, the more I'm finding what I like and what I don't like. Steep XC double-track endurance rides I don't much care for. Corkscrew single-tracks with bumps that loft you and obsticals to hop, I do like.
Recommended Route: Downiville Downhill. Annadell Park: Up rough-Go, down Lawndale. Up Shultz, down Lawndale.

Summary: we went back to pine mountain for the first time in a long time this past sunday. there were a whole BUNCH of DFL folks out there celebrating somebody's birthday. we did'nt get stoned with them, but we did watch some of them get stoned while they rested at the top of a tough climb, and some of them passed us while we were getting stoned near the outlet of the Secret Singletrack on Pine Mountain That Maybe Everybody Knows About. pine mountain, as i have told you before, can be a grim ride. the climbs are tough at times and the rocks in the trail are big. the pine mountain loop is a long ride, so you had better be prepared with food and drink, not to mention sufficient clothing to deal with the sudden changes in weather oh so common in the bay area. there is also the Secret Singletrack on Pine Mountain that i did'nt know about until one of the DFL boys told us how to find it. with respect to all of the do gooders out there and the builders of the trail and the MMWD, i will not tell anyone here where it is, but i will describe it as being quite a blast. it is very narrow and leafy, even more narrow and leafy than the JT Howell trail near china camp state park, or anything at skeggs point/el corte madera. finding and riding this trail raises my rating of the pine mountain loop from three tires to five, but again, i cannot tell you or give you any clues to where it is. by the way, if Mister DFL whose birthday it was on sunday, the 8th of december is reading this, a belated happy birthday to you. i hope you had a great time riding with all of your friends--it seems like you were when you passed me a warp speed, on a 'cross bike.
Recommended Route: hit 'em high and kick in the nuts--then stand back and listen to how loud they wail at 'ya.
Other recommended trails in the same area: all of them.

Summary: Some tricky rocky climbs to start off with but the trail is never steep and only one climb, back out of the canyon, is an extended climb - all of the other climbs are short. Route gets remote but is almost always picturesque. One part of the trail, on the top of the mountain, that has a section that tilts gently down has some fairly large rocks (golf ball to basketball size) and does not have a clean line so be carefull - a hardtail sucks in this section. For this loop, you have the option of coming in on (up) or going out on (down) Repack. Out of shape riders may be overwhelmed by the riding but fit riders will probably want to add more miles - possibly connecting over to Eldridge and getting in a Mt. Tam climb.
Recommended Route: BoFax Road trailhead, then loop clockwise.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Repack is a great climb to challenge your leg muscles and your lung capacity - try to stay on the "clean" line or you may have to walk a few yards and restart. DH'ers can bomb down when they are finished.
